African Beer

Post by tupalev »

I was wondering if anyone would have any suggestions for "must try" beers from Africa. I have a friend who will be making a trip to the continent shortly, specifically South Africa, and she has volunteered to possibly smuggle a bottle or two back. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Two extremely rare beers that you absolutely MUST try: Tusker Lager and Castle. I hear they put Rochefort to shame.

Uh, thanks, I'll make sure I try a Molson Canadian next time I'm in Canada too.

The foreign extra stout is quite good, i had a bottle from the Carribean. Check Ratebeer for the various countries in Africa. I have a bottle of Castle Milk Stout and Windhoek Lager in the fridge right now that someone brought back but by all accounts they are pretty mediocre.

Thanks guys, I saw a few on ratebeer and other than the Guinness, most had, like you said, pretty mediocre ratings. So unless there are some hidden gems out there, I'll probably just put in a request for a few bottles of that (although I've never had a milk stout before - I may give that a try).

from south africa, I would start with Castle Milk Stout, which should be easy to find. Mitchell's makes some decent beer - stout, bitter and the like. They're tougher to find but still reasonably available. After that it's hard to find the other breweries.
