Best Pilsner/Lager avail. at LCBO?

Post by elproducto »

I need to start brodening my horizons, and would like to start drinking some more german style beers. Which would be the best examples for me to start with avail at the LCBO?

I've found all of the following to be very drinkable:

Czechvar
Pilsner Urquell
Bitburger Premium Pilsner
Hacker Munich Edelhell
Konig Pilsner
Warsteiner Premium Lager
Wernesgruner Pilsner

Hope that helps.

Good start, thanks. I guess I can get most of those as singles too, which helps.

Don't forget some of the excellent local brews in those styles.

There is some difference between local & continental malts, but some of the imports are mere shadows of their former self. Freshness is key to some of these delicate styles, and pasteurization can really kill some flavours.

Our Pils/lagers often seem to be more like a Euro Pale Lager, Munich Helles or Czech Pils. I can't think of one that uses an abundance of German hops. But there's some good European flavour in the Muskoka (Premium Lager), King Pils & Stonehammer Pils. The Creemore Keller & Pils are both quite good. For Bocks you have Creemore & Amsterdam.

Unfortunately there's some great one's that don't make it to the LCBO (watch for the Vienna & Octoberfest Lagers in the fall).

Though obviously not lagers, but German styles:

Hefe:
Denison's
Magnotta
Muskoka

Roggenbier:
Mill Street

Alt:
Magnotta

And Duggan's is putting Denison's old German brewhouse to good use as well!

Think global, drink local. 8)

(Actually is fun to try them along-side their European counterpart).

Prima Pils, hands down full stop. But it was only a seasonal there I think?
I don't always piss in a bottle but when I do...I prefer to call it Dos Equis.

I think it was general list but did not last long.

I agree with this...one of my favourites for that wonderful brief time it was available. I hope it comes back.

Also a big fan of the Creemore Kellierbier, and the Mill Street Roggenbier.

In terms of pilsners I would agree on prima pils.. but since its not available I would stick to Urquell and Christoffel Nobel Nobel Pils.

All great responses, but I'd also give a shout out to one of my stand-by's, Radeberger Pils. Cheap and IMO surprisingly decent.
