Three parts Elora Special Bitter blended with one of Harviestoun Ola Dubh 12.

If anyone has the components and would make one, can you comment? I think it is a very round-tasting, flavourful beer with all the elements in the right place for a black IPA. The vanilla note of the Ola Dubh comes through nicely, too.

At the Judge:

Beau's Beaver River (not the freshest keg..)
Spearhead Hawaiian Pale Ale.. this time with that damn branded tulip. I wouldnt mind it so much if they charged less. Probably won't be getting this again as a result. Between their glasses and those "reviews", I've been getting nothing but a sketchy vibe from this brewer so far. Hopefully they can change that opinion.

Have some growlers of Taps Chuck Noris (wondering if they abandoned the name change) and their new seasonal, labelled only as "Pacific Gem" - I assumed it was another single-hop APA as they've been doing a few of those, but the woman at Taps mentioned something about it being Belgian to my girlfriend. The only mention of it online was Volo's IPADAY, which listed it as an IPA. Guess I'll have to wait and see! A part of me is hoping it's both, as the Taps Belgian IPA was amazing.

It's not exactly NOW, but later today I am introducing some wine friends of mine to proper beer, and with some "appropriate" cheeses, meats, breads & sweets........and I just can't wait. One of them thinks the best beer in the world is Guinness!!

Anyway, beers to be served, in no particular order are:

Howe Sound Megadestroyer Imperial Stout with Liquorice.
Boulevard Brewing “Smokestack Series” Saison 2010
Boulevard Brewing “Smokestack Series” Saison-Brett 2010
Boulevard Brewing “Smokestack Series” Stout 2010
Dogfish Head Chateau Ji'heau 2008
Anchor Brewing Our Special Ale 2009
Southern Tier Creme Brulee Imperial Stout 2008
Southern Tier Backburner Barley Wine 2008
Full Sail Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Porter 2010
Weyerbacher 13 Imperial Stout 2009
Blue Frog & Grog Imperial Stout 2010
Sierra Nevada 30th Anniversary Stout 2010
Sierra Nevada 30th Anniversary Grand Cru 2010
Sierra Nevada 30th Anniversary Black Barley Wine 2010

Got some cheeses lined up, such as Barely Buzzed (moroccan coffee & lavender infused) from Iowa (I think), 2 great Spanish blues, Queso Cabrales & Queso Valdeon, along with Roaring 40's, and aged gouda from Thunder Bay and a clothbound cheddar from PEI. With some black forest gateaux and various puddings to follow.

I think the Winey's may be impressed.

Cellar clearing night with some boys while the son was sick.

Deschutes Dissident 2010 (wow)
Deschutes Abbyss 2010
Laurelwood Workhorse IPA
Surly Coffee Bender
Surly Abbrassive
Surly Furious
Alaskan Barleywine 2010
Bruery Loakal Red
Russian River Consecration (wow)
Pliny the Elders
Three Floyds Dark Lord 2009
Goudenband 2004
Hill Farmstead Edward
Bruery Trade Winds Triple
New Glarus Raspberry Tart
Voodoo White Magik of the Sun
Avery DuganA IPA
Laguinitas Hop Stoopid

Was very dissappointed with the Surly, especially compared to Pliny and Hill Farmstead. The HF was Edward, an american IPA and it out-hopped the Abbrassive and the Furious by a long shot. The Bender was also nothing special, got compared to Mill Street Coffee Porter.

The Dark Lord was my first taste. And thank god there were some friends to split this. I had trouble finishing my glass. Its so sweet and thick, cloying.

Highlights of the night were the Consecration and the Dissident. Big time flavour, great wild yeast aromas, very drinkeable.

Propellor Extra Special Bitter. My first time trying it. It's a good English-style bitter, it reminds of a Wells IPA, Fuller's ESB on tap and Bass, as if you combined them in a craft version. The body seemed quite light to me, which may denote a high attenuation, which was traditional in bitter brewing in the 1800's. Or perhaps it underwent some evolution in the bottle. I found it very fizzy, but that's easily fixed by pouring hard and swirling in the glass. It's a nice alternative to the mass of mostly APA-style pale ales out there.

I wish I could find all that in Edmonton or Alberta. The only bottle purchased in Edmonton is the Anchor, all bottles are from trips to Portland, Whitefish & Buffalo.

And as an added surprise, Barrow Bob (from Volo) is in Edmonton for one night.....tonight. Gonna be a great night!!!
