I'm about to brew my first beer with a festa brew porter kit...I'm wondering...is it possible to add anything extra to the extract to make it more interesting, like vanilla bean or even oak chips, and where would I add it, in the boil or in the ferment?

My browser is messed up at the moment, but google "hacking a brewhouse kit" and select the PDF that comes up first from the Calgary homebrew club forums.

I did a Festabrew porter awhile ago, I added some extra extract, cherry juice, and swapped out the yeast for a Belgian yeast.
