St. Peter's Winter Ale

Post by old faithful »

A true winner, this one. It tastes like it was decanted from a cask of country real ale and put straight in bottle. It would shock me if this was pasteurised. It has a low, natural level of carbonation, a cask ale-level of fizz, in fact. If you chill this it will ruin it, drink it cellar or room temperature only. The taste is rich, winy, almost like a fizzy Burgundy wine. Light acidic hops cut the rich fruity malt, appropriately. This is an old ale with almost a licorice note, not a London porter but with porter-like notes. This makes almost all other English beers available in Ontario today (except Fuller 1845 and one or two others) look pretty bad. Don't miss out if you want to see what true traditional English ale is all about - but don't chill it very much or else its essential character will be lost.

I'm sipping one right now and quite enjoying it. Your description is spot on. Probably the best of the funny green bottles we've seen yet.

Oh, and I do think we've got the pasteurized bottle version here.

Love the color and aroma of this red ale...taste leans towards a spiced porter...very tasty. I prefer the Summer ale myself it seemed a bit more complex but subtle.
Aventinus rules!
