The Beer Store sucks...
I went to Peterborough recently and tried out the Publican House Breweries House Ale, and West Coast Pale... Holy shit. This is honestly the best Ontario/Beer period I have tried in a long time. They don't sell at the LCBO, but local Beer Stores around Peterborough. I live in Bowmanville, 50 mins away. I went to my local Beer Store, and asked if they could start stocking it. I was then explained to by the store manager that the brewery would have to pay a listing fee for there product to be sold there, she had no control over what is stocked there but wouldn't mind stocking, so unless they decide to expand there distribution of there product, the couldn't sell it... I hate Ontario's bullshit system, it is a honest to god detriment to small brewers, selection, and prices to consumer. Ontario needs a strong political leader to come in and cut the crap and scrap this system, one among many things... I am going to be seeing what the incumbent in my riding has to say about this.

Someone can correct me but if that beer is already in the beer store system, isn't the listing fee for getting it stocked in your store only around $200. Doesn't seem that much to me, so maybe the brewer decided that spending the time and effort to deliver to Bowmanville is not worth the trouble. Not sure how that aspect of things would change even if we didn't have the beer store.cattersley wrote:I went to Peterborough recently and tried out the Publican House Breweries House Ale, and West Coast Pale... I am just mad at this lame-ass system. Everyone on here goes to the States and or other provinces, and good beer, at good prices seems to be out there and accessible easily to all consumers and then you have to deal with the Ontario bullshit. There beer is fantastic. They brew around 8 different ones on draught, and can two... Would love to see them down here... Side note, got a Walmart special for only 79$, a lot cheaper then a Dyson Steelbackguy. Cheers all! Happy Friday.
Ontario has yet to recover from the temperance movement in the early 1900s. Allowing private sale of beer would go a long way to shedding the shackles of puritanical ideology.
Currently reading "The Art and Mystery of Brewing in Ontario" and it's shocking how many breweries were in operation prior to the 1916 temperance movement.

Just curious, was it stilled called the 'temperance' movement by the early 1900's? I thought the term 'temperance' was more late 19th century terminology, when the movement was more advocating moderation rather than total prohibition? I honestly do not know, but I've always figured it was referred to as the 'prohibitionist' movement by the early 20th century as that was what they wanted by that point. Or the 'Teetotalist Lobby', or 'Ignorant un-fun puritanical shitheads who felt that something not to their taste was something no one should enjoy', or something like that.

I am sure prohibition had a ton to do with that but I also wonder if it probably would have been kind of the same regardless. I mean I bet in 1916, Ontario was full of all kinds of local butcher shops and produce stores and bakeries where people bought their food from. Now most people buy their food from national supermarkets. And that was without any kind of prohibition, just how the market wnet. I wouldn't be shocked if beer production had gone the same way.Bonesey wrote: Currently reading "The Art and Mystery of Brewing in Ontario" and it's shocking how many breweries were in operation prior to the 1916 temperance movement.
I agree. It seems the technological leaps from two world wars brought us industrialized brewing, but Prohibition forever retarded people's beer literacy here.
Germany, too has a fraction of the ccountless brewers it did pre-war yet there was no prohibition so people still know their beer (sort of).
We can still thank Prohibition that our friends think Bud is great beer.

What makes you think the real issue at hand is booze?Lukie wrote:I´m sure booze is on your incumbent´s priority list.cattersley wrote:I went to Peterborough recently and tried out the Publican House Breweries House Ale, and West Coast Pale... Not true. They have a sign up right now stating that their Fest Lager is coming soon.kafercrazy wrote:....They've also stopped brewing seasonals in favor of getting their two main brews into TBS.
I think they've just stopped adding new seasonals for now. (ie. the IPA listed on their growlers.)
