Tried this really interesting beer last evening (imported from Buffalo). I must say it's different. Has anyone else tried it? Impressions?

Here are mine: A very nice looking beer, dark/deep red/auburn winish colour. A warm, thickish feel at first (but, perhaps, thins a little too quickly). Smell: fruity (raisons/grapes) and hints of nuts. Taste: brandish, but sweeter like port/sherry. It's made with green raisons that almost give it the flavour of a christmas cake. Very little bitterness. A nice dessert-type beer.

Okay so that's what I thought. Does anyone agree or disagree with me? I'm not sure I know what I'm tasting, so I would like to compare notes. How else do we learn?

Cheers, Joe.

Funny you should mention this beer. I was at Premier in Buffalo on Saturday morning and had this very beer in my hands.

However, I didn't want to get hassled at the border, so I wanted to keep my purchases to a minimum. Unfortunately, the Raison D'Etre went back to the shelf.

I was in a barley wine mood on Saturday, so I picked up some 2002 Sierra Nevada Bigfoot, Victory Old Horizontal and Flying Dog Horn Dog. Can't wait to try them out.

Got you guys beat...I was at Dogfish Head this weekend and had Raison d'Extra. This is 20.5% and has a lot of the same character, but with more smooth malts layered over top of it. I actually prefer the Raison d'Etre, though. I also had the 60 Minute IPA, which was a lot hoppier and lively than the 90 Minute, which I found too malty for a big, oily beer.

Cass, I was at Premier on Saturday afternoon and I also picked up a bottle of the 2002 vintage of Sierra Nevada Bigfoot barley wine. I will post a review of it as soon as I drink it, but that might be a year or two from now, as I want to age this ale.

I bought five other bottles which are
Woodfordes Norfolk Wherry Best Bitter
Coniston Bluebird Bitter
Harvieston Old Engine Ale
Harvey's A Le Coq Imperial Stout
and De Koninck

I will try to post reviews of these beers in
the future.

Premier's website boasts that they don't stock expired beer, but I had to point out to a employee that the Youngs Special London Ale expired in July 2001.
