A friend just got back from a trip down to Michigan and brought me back a bunch of different US micros. Today was.....
Spanish Peaks Black Dog Amber Ale
Bells Hell Hath No Fury Ale
Dark Horse Crooked Tree IPA
Dark Horse Scotty Karate Scotch Ale
I wasn't familiar with Dark Horse, but both of their beers knocked my socks off. The amount of good micros in Michigan blows my mind. Tomorrow will be more Spanish Peaks and Bells with some Founders and Lagunitas thrown in.

Unlike you lucky fools in Toronto, Fuller's ESB isn't available yet in St. Catharines. When I called my local LCBO I was told it would probably be at least a week before it was shipped. I guess i will just have to wait.
On the bright side this did lead me to return my empties and I stumbled upon a quasi-fresh case of Magnotta's IPA. Since I was out of luck on the ESB I figured I would give it a shot.
Now I wouldn't call it an IPA, but it has a nice hoppy nose and a bitterness that is typically absent in most ales in Ontario. I think at its price point it will become a staple in my fridge, and I will cycle through the rest of their line up. Especially with unemployment coming in a couple of weeks its nice to know good beer can come at a reasonable price.
I would like to thank my fellow Bartowelers for turning me on to this fine brewery and pint.

Now I wouldn't call it an American style IPA...

But it is quite nice and I'm glad you appreciate it. I feel your pain in regards to the ESB though, as KW has yet to see any Fuller's ESB which is a little depressing. I really love that beer (at least on tap), and 2.50 is an outstandingly good price in my view.
Luckily the main LCBO in Uptown Waterloo managed to find another case of Orval despite every other store in the area being under the impression that it's all gone. I was going to tell them about the cases sitting in warehouses waiting to be ordered that Esprit mentioned, but I guess they're more on the ball than I give them credit for.
Tonight I enjoyed a couple Muskoka Premium Lager's, and I'm fighting the temptation to pop open one of my Orval's that's supposed to stay in the cellar

Bottle of Grand River's IPA. I bought 2 cases of this sucker and I have been a little bit muted in my reaction to it so far. It is a fine beer, do not get me wrong, but the there was just something about the malt/hop combination (that is as technical as I get) added to the mineral-like water that just did not do it for me. Well, a month or so in my cellar has lead to a revelation as tonight, after staring out at a bleak frozen landscape filled with snow (i.e my yard and driveway) it is the best beer in the world. No seriously, it is tasting really good right now, like all of a sudden the flavours have just clicked for me. I think it is pretty neat when a beer (in a short time) changes like that, or more likely, my mood/perception changes like that. Now I am looking forward to that last case I have...
Two arguably subpar lambics - Mort Subite Kriek, and Chapeau Lemon. The Mort Subite is drinkable enough, perhaps a little simplistic and accessible for the dedicated beer lover, and not great value in my eyes. The Chapeau on the other hand is definitely a strange duck, and one that I'm quite enamoured with. I'm crap at explaining why, so here's my review:
I may pick some more up. At $1.80 this is excellent value. My one concern, though, is how well it will hold up. The De Troch website indicates it will be good for at least two years, but this is only a 3.5% beer. Any idea?A maligned and misjudged lambic. Pours a burnished gold with globs of yeast and lemon pulp in suspension. Very little head or retention. Aroma of pure lemon juice, mixed in with a bit of candied lemon peel and funk. Puckering lemonade flavour, but with complexity lurking beneath it in the guise of cider and caramel. Tart and refreshing, this certainly is a unique beer, and perhaps why it is so misjudged. Mouthfeel is medium-light with light carbonation, which I judge to be a great fit for the beer's refreshing qualities.
I liked it. Heck, I'd even consider buying a couple more and sticking them away for a bit. It reminds me very much of a palate cleanser, and I'm glad they made it. People will disagree with me though...
