The Czechvar Dark is suppoed to be pretty good. But I don't know since I've never actually tried it.

[quote=pootz]I'm axious to try it as well...270 day cold lagering cycle on that baby...bet it's as smooth as a baby's cheek and well developed in flavor profile....but it is not to be if one depends upon the confused and timorous purchasing politices of the state liquor monopoly.

To be honest with you, I did not find the dark one in Czech Rep....only the regular, the light, the non-alcoholic one and 'Bud Super Strong', which, IMHO, not that good (very sweet and alcohol-tasting)

At any rate the Czechvar beers are some of the few east block lagers that have earned the right to a permanet spot on LCBO and TBS shelves.....quality lager....unlike the other dozens of sub par commie lagers that have edged out quality lagers for LCBO shelf space.

I sometimes miss Radegast, that was one strange but quite interesting Czech lager.

I recall it. Different but Kozel seems to fill the spot.

If they got adventurous in importing more Czech beers someday I'd suggest the Liquor tyrants try Flekovský ležák ,,,great dunkel lager.

Reaching back to this thread to offer comments on a superb can of this beer. Production date (marked as such on the base) is January 21, 2010 and expiration date is 21/01/2011. Thus, 3 months from packaging. I have never had a better Czechvar even on draft.

It is clean but rich, with a honeyed sweetness underpinned by finest tangy and fruity Saaz hops. The components melded have an elegant, vinous note, like quality Riesling perhaps. The gold standard of lager beer. Pilsner Urquel is tops but I find this particular batch even better.

You have to try unpasteurized version available in select pub in Budweis (Ceske Budejovice) - the brewery home town. It's really hard to leave; the more you drink it, the more you want the next one!!
So many beers and so little time!!

In order for pub to qualify, they need to sell the tank in two days or less. Considering it is 1000 L tank, that's quite a bit of beer!! And that way it is always fresh!!!
