I'd be interested to know what the all grain brewers out there are doing in terms of base grain. Do you typically keep a sack of Canadian 2-Row and build all or most of your recipes from that? Or do you also keep sacks of Maris Otter, Pilsener, etc. handy?

We usually have sacks of 2 row, Maris, pilsner, wheat, and munich

I don't brew that much, so I usually just pay through the nose for what I need. But I did just use 30 lbs of various 2-row in the past couple of weeks... so that didn't really make much economical sense.

I did buy it in 5lb sizes, so it was a few dollars cheaper than by-the-pound.

I'm 5 lbs. away from finishing my first 55 lb. bag of Canadian 2-row. At $40 I think it was the wise choice. Starting to think that going bulk for 2-row, Marris Otter and Pilsner might be the way to go. Always fun to stock up on smaller quantities of specialty malts (got some biscuit, special b, smoked, chocolate and a few others right now).

I can buy 2-row for $24/bag. Just one of the benefits of living in Saskatchewan (the maltster is only 100k from the distributor), and being a member of an awesome brew club that pays for shipping (though we only do 1 order a year, so you have to plan out what you need).

I buy 2-row, pils, munich and maris otter by the bag.

Where did you get your 2-row for $40 a sack?

i think canadian 2-row is similar or cheaper from gilbertson and page too. though the only 2-row i buy is generally maris otter at more like $60/bag the last couple years.

I take it that Gilbertson & Page sell retail then? Will they deliver to individuals or would I perhaps have to order from them through my local HBS?

I took your recommendation on the Barleycrusher Grub, it's en route...

I'm visiting Grains Process in Scarborough on Saturday for the first time, will report back on current selection/pricing.

they don't have a retail space (it's a warehouse with a small office in front), but you can call and place and order, then pick it up. hours make it a bit tough though, 8-4 mon-fri. i usually swing up there in the morning and then go into work late. no idea if you could talk your LHBS into getting you some, and i suspect if you did it'd be a little higher priced than picking it up yourself.
