Got into someSt. Bernardus Wit, and some Abbaye des Rocs Brune, both at the cheery & warm Only Café.

While the Brune was superb as always (check there also for the St. Bernie 12!!) the Wit (Blanche) was frankly kind of flat & boring compared to the bottle I bought directly from New Beer Distributors in NYC. This is the second try and I wonder if it was a freshness issue. because in NYC it was very "open" lively fruity and spicy!!

Also wonder if some bottle-conditioned beer loses complexity when stored too long in a fridge.

Last night the missus finished off our last Edmund Fitzgerald Porter, and its always sad to see the final one leave the fridge. I hit up the Aventinus Weizen Eisbock, which just seems boozier every year. I used to love this beer, but I guess my taste has changed, and I find peppery alcohol so prominent in the flavour that its difficult to drink. I presume it would be a great candidate for mellowing in the cellar, though.

Fullers London Porter. An excellent beer (in my opinion) and at $2.25 a can until the end of January, this will be my session beer for the month.

Picked some up today for the same reason, along with some Schneider Weisse at 2.60. As much as we hate on the LCBO for its selection issues, they really do have some good deals on nice imports such as these.

Indeed, the LCBO pricing is good for some things, bad for others. For example, my brother is coming up from the states this weekend, so I was looking for some ST or Rogue beers for him to bring up, but they are super expensive! For example Rogue Yellow Snow (one I can directly compare) is $7.99 a bottle there, while we pay $6.45 at the LCBO. So instead I am getting him to bring me a bottle of Cabo Wabo Reposado Tequila. It is $82 at the LCBO, but he picked me up the same bottle for $55.

I took a flat of it an hour ago. There was one flat left on the shelf, run Matt, run!

I'm feeling pretty run down, won't be drinking, need rest...

But I noted that ALL THREE Unibrroue 750mls (Trois Pistoles, Maudite, Chambly.) are $5.25 + deposit!! That's almost like the Nineties again.

Drinking like a cask gravity pour... not such a bad thing.

i just finished up a blind tasting of leffe brune, affligem dubble, chimay premiere, and westmalle dubble.

2 of the 3 of us scored it westmalle, chimay, affligem, leffe

1 had it chimay, affligem, westmalle, leffe

ill post more details later tonight.

Scuttlebutt IPA... which was really just a great west coast pale ale (5.25%, but nice hoping).

Okocim Porter... 'best' before 10.2006, which was WAY too drinkable, and didn't have any oxidized or coca-cola like flavours like the last one I tried. Not the most flavourful, but certainly a good brew from a HUGE brewery. Why can't our big guys brew stuff with some flavour?
