Steelback Brewery

Has anyone tried any beer from the new Steelback (D'Angelo Brands)? They seem to be making a big push on their beer since the commercial is on at every commercial break during the hockey games on CBC. I just checked out the website (www.steelbackbrewery.com) and by the description of the beer, it looks like Cool, Lakeport and the Brick (PC Beer) have some strong competition….What a joke! And yes hockey is still on even if the Leafs are out…GO FLYERS GO!

Yes D'Angelo brands just opened up a fair sized brewery up in Northern Ontario. From what I've seen, they are targetting the "value" market segment. In other words, they will probably be producing thousands of litres of bland fizzy yellow but really really cheap "beer" for the guzzeling demographic.

Haven't tried any yet though, so I don't really know - just seems to be what their marketting is aimed at.

A few of us were "lucky" enough to try all three Steelback products this past weekend, and all of them were awful beyond belief. We reckoned that they must be brewing with some dirty yeast, as we couldn't figure out any other way that beer could be so light and watery and yet have such nasty off flavours.

Two of the three beers are already in the Bottom 50 at ratebeer.com - and the only reason the third one isn't there is because it needs another couple of ratings before it is eligible to be included in the rankings on the site.

I think we have a strong contender for the worst micro-brewery in Ontario, if not all of Canada.

The 'brewery' is a fruit concentrating plant next to Commercial Alcohols in the Bruce Nuclear Industrial Park. I toured the facility and it is a bit scary as far as a brewery goes. They use the concentrator as a brew kettle and the fruit press is double dutied as a mash filter.

My question is, What happens once fruit comes into season? Does it go back to a fruit squishing operation again? Be wary...be very wary!

Beers like this make me wonder why people don't just drink cheap vodka...

...and thanks to new ratings from Radek and a couple of other people, all three Steelback beers are now in the Bottom 50 at RateBeer.com, with Tango having the dubious distinction of coming in at Number 2 with a bullet! Only Busch Non-Alcoholic is rated worse. Yikes!

I haven't tried the stuff, but given the reviews, I would guess that the dried sweat from the jockstraps of the three former goalies appearing in the ad - Johnny Bower, Tony Esposito, and Mike Palmateer - is the key ingredient in the brew.

Apparently when the fruit press is busy squishing fruit the beers are all strained through my granny Mildred's undies.

Granny Mildred's undies eh? What does that taste like...Depends!
Steelback sounds like an arm of the government...I guess that would be STEALback though
Let Steelback find its market. We know that there is a demand for bland fizzy beer. It will be a tough go for them though, as SleeMolBat have deeper pockets and brand loyalty on their side. But if Steelback offers a buck-a-beer, who knows!
Have a great May 24 weekend all.

Did anyone here ever have the dubious honor of trying Copperhead's products? And if so, which is worse? I still have nightmares from thier Screamin' Beaver Lager....

If you can't picture a screamin' beaver, then you haven't been near the working end during childbirth!
I remember Copperhead, the gleam of the plastic fermenters brings a tear to my eyes... The only beer they brewed that was worth mentioning was their Wit. It was okay.
