Sgt. Major in stubbies

Perry: had the first opportunity to try the Sarge in the new stubs and I gotta say that much of the old character has come back into the sarge...hops particularly...what are you running here a light cascade variety at about 45 IBU of better? It's great patio sipping with grilled Dorado. 8)

At any rate it seems improved over the first kegged Sarge I had after the move to Heritage....thanks for getting some bottles down to the Micro wastelands of K-W

I agree it is not bad - the Church Key version was more citrus-rindy and resiny, the aroma was almost funky, but the current Heritage version has more oomph than other well-hopped Pales from Ontario.

They have come a long way.

Wow, different strokes and all that but I tried the stubby last week and struggled to finish it. I didn't just think it paled compared to the Old Sgt. major (which I loved), I thought it just outright sucked. I love Perry and I love Scotch Irish but the new Sgt. Major is dead to me.

Yeah BlankBoy Heritage can be so inconsistent that the one I tried might have been a particular batch or six-pack or bottle I got, or the mood my palate was in.

But a beer that needs ANY such excuses for 12 bucks a six is definitely in peril, I concur totally. I am actually afraid to try the Heritage Maple Lager still lurking in my fridge...

With excellent Pales such as Black Oak & St. Ambroise readily available (even great lagers like Neustadt, Brooklyn and King Pilsner) it's VERY hard to be patient with the Sgt's sometimes 'off' characteristics - it is just not Perry's IPA anymore even if it may be drinkable.

I tried a bottle last night--batch E237 (bottled May 23rd, presumably, so quite fresh). It had a nice aroma, good carbonation. Flavourwise, it was alright. A little watery, but with a decent dose of hops. Overall, I'd say it was closer to OK than very good: reasonably pleasant, what more can I say?

It's decent and drinkable, but it was the citrus rind and resin that make this beer once so special in our market. Now it's whatever...a lot like many other English-style ales, but more bitter. Like Belgian said, it's not Perry's IPA anymore.
