Christmas Hauls?

Post by Bytowner »

So any beer related Christmas dreams come true?

Experienced a true Christmas miracle when my girlfriend's flight into Heathrow was rescheduled a couple hours before she was due to take off.

She brought a London pub guide I hadn't seen, and Webb/Pattyn's "100 Belgian Beers to try before you die". It's a great little book, though Webb has that shocking arrogance that only British beer writers can seem to pull off. Still, great tasting notes and a couple new ones to me. Best of all, she tucked in a handful of euros for me to plan a trip across to the continent for some beer hunting in the near future.

Merry Christmas Bartowel friends!

Lucky you! Closest thing I got was a red wine aerator. Now only if I had red wine... I could use it!

I'll try it on older barleywines... Maybe it can be used with those also.

With a few well placed hints:
From the brother in-law - Brewing Extreme Beers - Sam Calagione

From my wife and kids:
- Brew Like a Monk - Stan Hieronymus
- Belgian Ales 6 - Piraat, Gluden Draak...
- Hirschbrau 3 Bottle Gift Pack
- Subscription to BYO
- A Beer Geek T-shirt

- but no Christmas miracles from the carboy in the basement, some inactive Belgian yeast had to be switched out for some SA-05 this morning. My Belgian IPA is now an IPA.

Glad to hear others got some nice treats as well! My unreasonably generous girlfriend and her family were kind enough to grab me the following for Christmas:

Avery DuganA IPA
Rogue Mogul Madness Ale
Short's Black Cherry Porter
Dark Horse Reserve Special Black Bier Ale
Sierra Nevada Porter (x 2)
Bell's Special Double Cream Stout (x 2)
Avery New World Porter (x 2)
Rogue Santa's Private Reserve Ale
Bell's Porter (x 2)
Dark Horse Tres Blueberry Stout
Avery Seventeen - Dry Hopped Black Lager
Chatoe Rogue First Growth OREgasmic Ale
Souther Tier 422 Pale Wheat Ale
Lake of Bays Mocha Porter (x 2)
Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale (x 6)

Plus Nicholas Pashley's Cheers! An Intemperate History of Beer in Canada, a Black Oak "Beer Nut" t-shirt, and - in a strange and slightly offensive twist - a bar of Nutcracker Porter soap.

With the last one I can't tell whether they were being tongue-in-cheek (my hope), or genuinely presuming I like beer so much that I want to shower in it (:o). If that day ever comes, I'll know that my hobby has officially become a disturbing obsession.

Anyhow, Merry Christmas to all Bar Towellers, and I look forward to reading about some of the gems that people will undoubtedly be cracking out tonight. Cheers!

Not a milliliter of anything. And I though I was clueless about gifts! 8) Actually I'm a pretty good gifter, and I'm sure the pile of Teaopia junk they bought me (?????) will be exchanged for some very nice black teas. I like those just fine.

Did pretty good, got the following from my girlfriend:

-Rochefort chalice
-Triple Karmeleit chalice
-Vintage framed Orval poster
-pack of Southern Tier coasters
-pack of Rogue coasters

My mum was down in the states and she brought me back:

- 2 x Brooklyn Local 1
- 2 x Brooklyn Local 2
- 2 x Avery the Beast
- 1 x DFH Wide Stout
- 2 x Jolly Pumpkin Oro de Calabaza
- 2 x Triple Karmeleit magnums

So all in all, a pretty darn good Christmas after unwrapping all of those.

Nickelass, do you know where your girlfriend got the Rochefort chalice? I've been looking for one for quite some time.

Yeah, I'd love to know also, I have a bottle that I've been holding on to on the hopes that I get proper glassware. Hopefully it's not a store in Timmins that carries them

Yes well the Beer Glass Emporium in Timmins has such a great selection.....

She said she found it on Ebay, with the buyer shipping out of the UK.

Yeah, I'd love to know also...
There were a few at Premier Gourmet three weeks ago, I looked at them a number of times but resisted the urge to buy.

Speaking of funky chalices, the nice old Koningshoeven one I found for a dollar this year has a scalloped look shaped into the glass - it reflects the light through the beer in a cool way.
