Inspired by home brewers from across the country, last year President Obama bought a home brewing kit for the kitchen. After the few first drafts we landed on some great recipes that came from a local brew shop. We received some tips from a couple of home brewers who work in the White House who helped us amend it and make it our own. To be honest, we were surprised that the beer turned out so well since none of us had brewed beer before.

As far as we know the White House Honey Brown Ale is the first alcohol brewed or distilled on the White House grounds. George Washington brewed beer and distilled whiskey at Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson made wine but there's no evidence that any beer has been brewed in the White House. (Although we do know there was some drinking during prohibition…)

Since our first batch of White House Honey Brown Ale, we've added the Honey Porter and have gone even further to add a Honey Blonde this past summer. Like many home brewers who add secret ingredients to make their beer unique, all of our brews have honey that we tapped from the first ever bee-hive on the South Lawn. The honey gives the beer a rich aroma and a nice finish but it doesn't sweeten it.

Corn sugar...pffffp...
Well the recipe only uses it for priming, so its not like they are using it to boost gravity

Funny - All I see in that picture is a Baptist from Chicago via Hawaii enjoying a beer. To each their own though

Pretty decent recipes, honestly. I guess that there's not a huge amount of space in the galley over there.

I feel sorry for the brewers. If they forget to sanitize, they might get hung for treason.

I stand corrected. I just looked at the ingredients not the process. But forgive me for assuming the President took a shortcut - it's happened before!

Wouldn't it be cool if the Whitehouse hosted a "learn to brew event"? Perfect recession survival training.

I'd also love to see them resurrect a settlers era pumpkin ale. I've heard this is what Washington brewed. A good classic pumpkin (at least what I've tried) is drinkable, v.s. the sweet pumpkin pie spice messes the keep being churned out these days.

That's actually a hell of an election event. Harken back to the founding fathers while doing something worthwhile.

You know, one of my first columns for the Sun, I tried to convince Stephen Harper to Homebrew. Sort of glad he didn't. Would have done wonders for his popularity in the short term.

Sure, but it is hardly newsworthy.

Maybe next week they will do a media blitz on the White House homemade cakes made from a Betty Crocker mix.
