Big Rock $15 6 packs?!?

I see on Monday that all of Big Rocks 6 packs are going up to $15 per 6 pack! I don't often purchase many of their beers but found it strange that they would raise their brands almost $2 per 6 pack. Hopefully this isn't a sign of things to come for other small brewers.

Raising the price may make you seem more exclusive and better than you really are. Its an old trick that vodka makers have been abusing for a long time.

Most of their beer sucks in the first place. Who is going to pay 15 for a 6 pack of Trad Ale? Anyone that would pay that, deserves to get ripped off!

It may be part of their strategy to re-brand themselves as more "craft centric" over the last couple of years, possibly including "premium" pricing. First they introduced the Kasper-Schultz micro brew house, now just recently their Alchemist line of limited, extreme beers (their branding, not mine). Jason Foster had a story on it over on www.onbeer.org/ I'd post the exact link, but I'm on my phone right now and fingers are too damn fat to do that cut n paste shit.

Big Rock was a craft beer pioneer back in the day. Good on them if they can catch back up and produce some worthwhile beers, but I have some healthy skepticism.

Actually that part of the blog is worth reposting here...

Foster writes:

"The press release offers big things. The number of exciting adjectives and adverbs was rather staggering. To use their own words, they describe the line-up as their “most innovative”, “ultrapremium and rare labels” released in “intensely limited quantities”. They say the beer will be designed “to showcase our artistry and appeal to a subculture of men and women that value independent thinking, appreciation of art, creativity, intelligence and anything non-mainstream”. Finally, the brewmaster, Paul Gautreau, “ventures deep into uncharted brewing territory to craft bold, small batch beers that pay no heed to the rules of what came before. Adventurous and experimental, these risky brews are their own reward.”"

As Foster puts it: It's impossible to oversell a line of beers more than they have here...It's kind of silly, actually...what could they be possibly brewing that lives up to this kind of hype? Best. Beer. Ever!

That's too bad. I liked some of their beers, but there's no way I'd pay $15 for the same stuff for no good reason.
