Beer in Sri Lanka

I finally got around to checking some beer notes and sorting through pictures, etc from my travels to Sri Lanka a while back.

While there are ~20 beers or so around the country these days, they are all pretty generic.

Lion Stout / Sinha Stout was by far the best beer I had in the country, and there were a handful of other decently drinkable brews.

I found the "Three Coins" brand to be the most adventurous in terms of styles unique to the country, but it's line up of beers is currently limited as the brewer - McCallum - was bought out and the new brewer has seemingly discontinued the more interesting beers.

Oddly, many beers in Sri Lanka are strong, with an abnormal number of them clocking in at 8.8% alcohol....something I couldn't ever find an explanation for.

While Sinha Stout is the only one I can say is great....the other beers I can recommend giving a try in Sri Lanka are:

– Three Coins Lager

– Bison XXXTRA Strong

- Lion Lager

– Three Coins, 3C Irish Dark (if you can find it)

There is a longer list of Sri Lanka beers on my website, but the rest of the brews I had were nothing out of the ordinary.

Overall, not much to get excited about beer-wise in Sri Lanka. It was a fascinating country though.

kind of funny (and off topic):

i am looking at brewing a Sri Lankan-inspired beer. from what i've read, my beer would be a bit more exciting than the generic national offerings they have

Haha, definitely. Lots of spices and interesting Sri Lankan ingredients to chose from though if that's your approach for your beer...cool idea!
