Came across this RPA press release (or whatever it is) and noticed the little blurb at the bottom. I'm guessing an Imperial Stout. Aged in rum barrels? Could be interesting..

Interesting. Despite the fact that I think Cameron's should be banned from ever purchasing any kind of oak barrel, I won't be able to not try this one...

I thought of that right away. I assume that trademark laws aren't applicable in the case of Canadian/US craft beers for some reason (not sure why). This is almost as bad as Beau's Double Wide IPA (Boulevard).

Unless the people at Cameron's are complately out of touch with the US craft beer scene, they should be aware of Deschutes Obsidian Stout. I find this somewhat embarassing for Cameron's.

And given the fact that Deschutes are in BC & Alberta. I know we drinkers won't get confused with the beers, but some might kick up a fuss. I guess it's not an issue until either Cameron's move out West, or Deschutes move East.

Often depends on distribution - see the issues with Red Racer out in BC and Racer 5

Indeed potential trademark issues here. Deschutes has an approved Canadian Trademark for the word Obsidian in Canada.

When it comes to one-off and special beers I'm sure most breweries don't care about checking such things....but for regularly brewed beers it should be a first step.

Mind you, Cameron's only seems to be calling this Cameron's RPA / Rye Pale Ale, which is in tune with their existing line up. The Obsidian reference on the promo sheet is minimal...easy for them to drop it.

Thanks for digging that up. Interesting indeed.

As much as you might be right about the one-off versus regular argument, I still think it is incredibly lazy on Cameron's part.

Interesting. I wonder if this one will see a very limited LCBO distribution like their last two barrel aged beers or be more widely available.
