I'm heading to Boston over thanksgiving with the Mrs. Anyone have any insights on the city? So far all I have to go on are the BA/RB pages which seem to indicate that Lord Hobo and The Publick House are my best bets.

When I tried to get at those from the search feature, all I got was a 404 exception. I'll give 'em a perusing.

yeah, the search is finicky... but if you click on the last post icon (the little page beside the username, on the far right side), it'll pull the thread up.

We did a tour of Boston and NYC last fall and really enjoyed both cities. By now you've probably deduced that Cambridge is tops for beer and food. We stayed on Alewife Brook Parkway, went to the city in the day for lunch and touristy stuff, then took the subway back to Cambridge at night for dinner and drinks.

Our favourite Cambridge bars were Lord Hobo, Meadhall, and Atwood's Tavern. Tupelo is an awesome Creole/Cajun restaurant that was featured on Triple D (http://bit.ly/T723CB), and is well worth considering IMO. It also has a very respectable beer selection.

In Boston proper, Picco is an excellent option for lunch and drinks (killer Neapolitan pizza & ice cream), Yard House Fenway is your best bet for beer & food before or after a Red Sox game, and Harpoon Brewery is great for a brewery tour and drinks if you're down by the Harbor. They also provide a shuttle to Fenway and are located right beside Yankee Lobster (http://bit.ly/1nzEE6y). All I can say about Yankee is "just go."

Redbones is a great BBQ restaurant (http://bit.ly/1nCCa5Z) known for both their stellar food and massive beer selection. It's a little bit further afield in the Somerville area, but worth considering on your way into or out of Boston.

Finally, we didn't make it to Jacob Wirth or Cambridge Brewing, but both spots were recommended to us by locals. Hope that helps! Cheers

Lord Hobo is the real deal, definitely worth checking out.

The Sunset Grill has positive memories for me as it was one of the first bars I went to that had 100+ taps. A fun spot and worth it if you can make it there.

I've also had a good time on the Sam Adams brewery tour if that's something that interests you.

Deep Ellum is a good spot. And there's another place (can't remember the name) down a small street near the Macy's IIRC. Decent pub.

Spent a new year's midnight at Eastern Standard and it was a good spot if you're in the area.

Redbones BBQ is worth the trip too. damn fine bbq and lots of great craft beer (at least when i was there years ago).

in addition to all mentioned above, I'd recommend a few places, focusing on the South End:

I'll second the recommendation of Picco. Great pizza, great ice cream, great beer.

The Five Horses Tavern has a decent list, though the location on Columbus closes early (11 or 12 pm) as it is in a somewhat residential neighbourhood.

Estelle's at Tremont and Mass Ave has good food at a fair price and a decent beer list as well.

In terms of restaurants that aren't necessarily known for beer, I would strongly recommend both The Gallows and B&G Oysters. You'll definitely want a reservation for B&G during the dinner hours, though my wife and I have never had a problem getting a spot for 2 later in the evening (B&G is open until 11 pm).

I will respectfully disagree with the recommendation to visit CBC. I found the experience very underwhelming, and many of their interesting offerings can be found in bottle shops around town. In my opinion, your time in the MIT area is much better spent at Meadhall.

If you drive down, make the trek to Julio's Liquors on the way back.

If you are looking for a place to stay, I would also strongly recommend Encore Bed and Breakfast. It is centrally located and very clean, and rooms can generally be had for a cheaper rate than downtown hotels. The proprietor, Reinhold, is also a fantastic host!

Anyone have anything downtown? I seem to be getting mostly eat/drink spots in Cambridge (my hotel is there, so that's great) and further south (Fenway, Fremont or Allston). But The fun history/walking and such seems to be all downtown, where I have nothing so far.

Met a Bostonian in Vermont who insisted the best thing to hit craft in Boston was Trillium.

Yeah, that looks like a winner. Nice and close to downtown too.

Heading down for a conference in about a week. Staying near the convention center/Fenway. Anything else new or recent worth recommending?

For people who went to Trillium, was it worth it? From my reading they have a limited liquor licence and can only do samples at the brewery. Are there things in their bottle shop that don't make it on draught or into local bottle shops?
