Re: France 2023 Beer Notes

German beer is not easily found in France apart specialty retailers. Ditto foreign beer in general, unless brewed in France of course,. Belgian beer is the main exception, with big brewers' Abbey beers widely available like Grimbergen, Leffe, etc. You find others plus Trappist in many supermarkets t...

Re: France 2023 Beer Notes

Thanks to Cass and others for input on the sideways images, I may try the 90 degree deal but for the moment will continue. Here you see a place that is a shared premises for a craft brewer, Brasserie Bleue, and a specialty beer retailer, Allez Hops. It was closed today but I'll visit later this week...

Re: France 2023 Beer Notes

No, doesn't work. Will see further what I can do at this end. Here is the Meteor Christmas. Old established, still independent brewery in Alsace. Rich and sweet, with orange accents (orange rind is added). Per the abel malt extract and sugar are also used in recipe. Perhaps this cuts the palate back...

Re: France 2023 Beer Notes

Some of them did show upright I believe? I think if I do two the second shows that way. I can try putting two in a message, and remove the first or dummy one by an edit. Eg here to show Meteor Christmas beer.

Re: France 2023 Beer Notes

As Cass noted, when you click on these images it straightens out a sideways looking image.

Not sure why that happens, I think may be the way
the forum software reads data embedded in the jpeg.

Here is intended image for previous message, but same issue.

Re: France 2023 Beer Notes

A draft Christmas ale, from Brasserie du Comte in the Nice area. Lost its brewery in a storm 3 years ago, was rebuilt, but some beer is still made other breweries loaning their premises. Nice sweet malt taste and pleasant subtle balancing of seasonal spice flavours. At Foam bar in port area.

Re: France 2023 Beer Notes

Thanks Cass, brewing here has become much more craft in nature, yet always with a twist. Eg. I noticed they like flavoring beer, all kinds of spices and other things, even in IPA. Or they will do a smoked malt IPA. One kind of neat thing is the bigger names, the Grimbergen Abbey line say, do takes o...

Re: France 2023 Beer Notes

Here we have Calena, a Biere Brune of La Brasserie Artisanale de Nice. A rich suave number, only lightly flavoured with cocoa beans and citrus peel. Proof were it needed quality brewing operates irrespective of place or meridian.

Re: France 2023 Beer Notes

These are generally well-regarded in craft circles.

I believe Foreign Extra can be had on draft as well at the Baltimore outpost of Guinness.

Re: France 2023 Beer Notes

I meant, for availability, the Dublin-made one. A version of FES is also brewed locally in a few spots around the world including the Caribbean and Nigeria, due to long-standing local markets. I can also get the Nigerian version here, may try soon to A/B with Dublin's. It uses sorghum in the brewing.

Re: France 2023 Beer Notes

A classic of Guinness, Foreign Extra Stout is the closest type still made to 19th century heyday Guinness. 7.5 per cent. An export stout with a tang that recalls the long aging it used to get in vats. This is available in Ireland, Britain, a good part of Europe, U.S., but not Canada. I've never unde...

Re: France 2023 Beer Notes

Found this in a small Indian grocery in Nice. From Madagascar. Standard international pils, made by a brewery called Star. Well made, fresh, tasty. Corn and sugar adjuncts used (per label) but a good natural beer taste results. I opened this after a "bio" (organic) craft brune gushed on op...

Re: France 2023 Beer Notes

This little number was released in European markets a few years ago. A nice take on Carlsberg lager - unfiltered (though I'd think pasteurized), with a slightly sweet taste. Mild, rounded hop character, a touch fruity. Just under five percent abv.

Re: France 2023 Beer Notes

Tried Pilsner Urquell in brown bottle, same one LCBO still gets although sales of the can are probably higher. It is very good but I can't see any obvious difference from the Urquell we get. Bottle was about two months from packaging going by date code,. Ontario gets it at about same age, maybe anot...

Re: France 2023 Beer Notes

This symbol and the sorting one next to it mean, afaik, the bottle is considered recyclable and when disposed of a separate container should receive such glass. I think the three short arrows designate the different bins that get either bottles, regular trash, and maybe paper.
