Just in case the LCBO was wondering, Lew Bryson has written a great article on the subject. Quite frankly, the first paragraph sums up perfectly what I've been saying all along, that the LCBO model of trying to market high end beer in a large number of stores is not the road to great success. They are doing the first and second stages well, but what we here in bartowelville want is stage three!

One or two "beer boutiques" in Ontario makes a lot of sense to me. These boutiques though would have to held to a different standard than LCBO's get-em-in-get-em-out policy. It might take some time to catch on, but I think a store in Toronto and, perhaps, Ottawa would ultimately do well. Moreover, I don't these boutiques would affect the LCBO's other business anywhere other than in their immediate surroundings. Nor, would/should the LCBO have to change its policy in their other stores. For instance, I would continue to buy beer regularly in Hamilton and instead of travelling to Buffalo (sorry, Lyle) I would go to Toronto. In fact, the LCBO would probably end up getting more of my business.

I know we've had these discussions before, and I know points will be made about test markets, etc. But, it a worthwhile topic, even though things will probably never change.

Joe.
