Godspeed - Je Me Souviens

Post by Cass »

It was nice to be back at a tap takeover again yesterday, as Godspeed held "Je Me Souviens", with a bunch of taps from Quebec breweries.

https://godspeedbrewery.com/menu-jemesouviens

It was fairly controlled with table service and seating, so I missed the walking around and socializing that I loved about in-bar events of the past. But hopefully we'll get there soon. It was a nice vibe in there with great beers. Nice to see Bim again after a couple of years. Menu copied below. It's still happening today (Sunday, Mar 20) if anyone wants to check it out.
DIEU DU CIEL ÉQUINOXE DU PRINTEMPS SCOTCH ALE W/ MAPLE AGED IN ISLAY SCOTCH BARRELS (2019) 9.1% ABV

This legendary brasserie built a bridge between old and new world beers from the moment they opened in 1998.

Would a burgeoning craft beer scene in Canada exist without them?

Montréal, QC Est. 1998

DUNHAM BOURBON BARREL AGED BALTIC PORTER (COLLAB W/ WIDAWA 2021) 10.0% ABV

These mixed fermentation and barrel–aging specialists helped usher in a newfound appreciation for delicate,

fermentation-focused beers in Quebec. This was cold conditioned for 10 months before spending time in barrels.

Dunham, QC Est. 2010

LE CHEVAL BLANC VIENNA LAGER 5.4% ABV

Started by Jérôme Denys back in 1988—a true visionary–Cheval Blanc’s

Montreal Brewpub was the first of its kind. It’s where many of Quebec’s best got their start.

Montréal, QC Est. 1988

SOLD OUT - AUVAL CÔTE GRISETTE 4.6% ABV - SOLD OUT

Ben Couillard’s focus on farmhouse ale has elevated Quebec’s beer scene to new heights.

His terroir focused saisons and grisettes are some of the best in the country.

Gaspé, QC Est. 2015

BAS-CANADA NEMESIS IPA (EL DORADO, CITRA, MOSAIC & ELLA) 7.1% ABV

Relative new kids on the block, Bas-Canada has tastefully brought Quebec craft beer

into the contemporary discussion with some of its finest luxurious IPA and dessert stouts.

Gatineau, QC Est. 2017

MESSOREM BRACITORIUM ONE HUNNA: SIMCOE DOUBLE IPA 8.2% ABV

Inspired by modern American craft brewers, Messorem’s beers are deliciously decadent

and provocative, which has solidified their place atop Montreal’s new wave of breweries.

Montréal, QC Est. 2019

CHEMINS DES SEPT CIDRE SURPÔ 2020 8.1% ABV

Chemins des Sept is reinvigorating Quebec’s already illustrious cider trade.

They use 100% natural fermentation and their beautiful orchards sing in every cider.

Saint-Jean-Baptiste, QC Est. 2016

SOLD OUT - ISLE DE GARDE SVĚTLÝ VÝČEPNÍ 10⁰ CZECH PALE LAGER 4.2% ABV - SOLD OUT

Dispensed using “Side Pull” Lukr Faucet - 450mL or Šnyt (~2/3rds)

Isle de Garde is arguably the most influential craft lager brewer in Quebec today.

They’ve mastered simple yet refined styles in the Czech, German, and English traditions.

Montréal, QC Est. 2010

450mL $9.75 Šnyt $7.00

SOLD OUT - L’AMÈRE À BOIRE ČERNÁ PILSENER BOHÉMIENNE 5.0% ABV - SOLD OUT

Dispensed using “Side Pull” Lukr Faucet - 450mL or Šnyt (~2/3rds)

We are graced with one of the first brewpubs ever to open in Quebec back in 1996.

Their Černá is likely the first “craft” Czech-style lager brewed in the province, if not all of Canada.

Montréal, QC Est. 1996

450mL $9.75 Šnyt $7.00

SOLD OUT - HOPFENSTARK LOST MACHINE STEINBIER (COLLAB W/ VOIVOD) 5.0% ABV - SOLD OUT

Dispensed using “Side Pull” Lukr Faucet - 450mL or Šnyt (~2/3rds)

Hopfenstark pushes boundaries of German-style beer, including this collaboration with

Quebec’s biggest heavy metal band–an historical lager brewed using hot stones.

L’Assomption, QC Est. 2006

450mL $9.75 Šnyt $7.00

Wowsers...hadn't heard of this, but sounds amazing! Let's hope there will be more of these events in the future.

Did you get any beers to go? Did you eat anything? Let us live vicariously through you...

It was a lot of fun. Didn't take anything hope as it was all draught. Got to try the Isle de Garde, Hopfenstark, Bas-Canada & Amere a Boire I believe. Didn't eat anything either, was too focused on the beer! :)

Was great to be in a "tap takeover" atmosphere again. Indeed, here's hoping for more!

This event is back at the end of the month, with a feature on Unibroue. They were one of my early faves back in the day and nice to still see them getting some love. Curious to see what beers they’ll have.

Ah, Unibroue. <3 Still have fond memories of the dinner at The Academy of Spherical Arts. Thanks for posting this, Cass -- I'll be sure to head on down to it.

Yeah, Unibroue was one of my early beer obsessions and one of the reasons I started beer writing. I still buy the mix pack from TBS from time to time.

Definitely curious to see what they'll bring in. The mix packs are always a treat.
They have some newer brews I haven't had like P'tite Maudite.
For $5 I used to get 20oz pours of Trois Pistoles at a hostel in Tadoussac...plenty of fun, but fuzzy, memories from those trips.

***Can't share too much yet, but we'll definitely have a fresh keg of P'tite Maudite to debut. Bartowel exclusive ;)
