I was reading through Unibroue's latest annual report, and it contained some interesting tidbits regarding this year's plans.

Soon Unibroue should be launching two new beers, "Fringante" and "Terrible", part of a new "sophisticated, high-end" line named "Fleurs de biere", of which 10 was a part of. Might be cool, but we may never see them in Ontario, like the 10.

Potentially more interesting is that Unibroue is going to be producing a bourbon and a Quebec whisky!

Interesting news. It's great to see a good Canadian brewery expanding. I hope, however, this growth doesn't make them the target of a take-over.

Cheers, Joe.

Another interesting new tidbit from Unibroue - the 750mL versions of Maudite and Blanche de Chambly are back in the LCBO! These are the formats that started it all with Unibroue in Ontario.

Not sure how widespread they are, but I spotted them today in the Bayview Village LCBO.

There also seems to be an apple/fruit beer, L'Éphémère - pommes. My translation skills are limited so here is the French from Unibroue's Website.

Here's my go at the the translation.

L'Éphémère - pommes is the third in a series of Wheat/White beers with fruit (literal translation: fruit beers in a wheat/white style. Brewed from 100% natural ingredients, L'Éphémère - pommes is a happy mixture of Springtime wheat and barley to which is added apple, spices and natural aromas.

L'Éphémère - pommes is a beer on lees (literal translation: yellow dregs ) that has a pale yellow colour with jade reflections. It one of a collection of refined and exotic beers that can be had as an appertif or with dessert.

Cheers, Joe.

Hello all,

Tasted de Ephemere au pomme last night...a more floral and fruity version of the Blanche, with a little cider side to it, but not overbearing. Also, managed to get the Terrible and Fringante at Fourquet Fourchette in Chambly, before its going out in the SAQs...not sure i LCBO will bring it here in Ontario...lets hope so!

For those who can read French, Unibroue has info on their other two new beers (Terrible & Fringante) on their website:

M. Lubiere,

I will be passing through Montreal later in the month. Could you recommend some good places to buy local and imported beer? I have Metro Joanette of Verdun on my radar, but I was wondering if you knew of any depanneurs, SAQs, or other stores close to downtown that are worth the visit?

Merci.

Matt,

If you are coming in by the 401/20 , stop at le Gobelet, a dépanneur in Vaudreuil which stocks up most QC fares and has some good imports. There adress is :

78 Valois, Vaud Dor, QC J7V 1T1 (450)455-1667

They actually have 2 exclusive beers made for them by St-Arnould in the Laurentians.

The other dépanneur is Rahman's, on Laurier, near the Dieu du Ciel brewpub:

151 Laurier O, Montréal, QC H2T 2N6
(514)279-2566

Third choice is the Fromagerie du Marché Atwater, just for the choice of cheeses in the store along with the beers.

134 Atwater, Montréal, QC H4C 2G3

As the SAQ, the selection is been dismal at best...best bet is to go on SAQ.com, click on English, and browse what they have in the montreal area...The main store is at 440, boulevard De Maisonneuve Ouest, but they have outlets on Wellington (next to the de l'église station , near Joanette) and at the Atwater Market.

Good trip!

M. Lubiere, I would once again like to thank you for your extremely helpful advice. Thanks to you I was able to bring back lots of good beer from Quebec with a minimal amount of fuss.

The only suggestion I missed out on was Rahman's, although I did pass by it and could see from the signs in the window that it is indeed a very good beer-friendly dépanneur. I'll have to go there next time.

The Fromagerie du Marché Atwater had a terrific selection of local beers, and the market itself is well worth the visit for the flowers, the meats, the pies, the pastries and other baked goods, etc (the market is somewhat similar to Toronto's St Lawrence Market).

I was very impressed with Le Gobelet; the selection of Quebec beers was outstanding and the clerk was extremely helpful, knowledgable and friendly. She went out of her way to speak to me in English and was kind enough to put up with my dismal French.

Le Gobelet also has an outstanding selection of branded beer glasses, as did Metro Joanette. I added a few to my collection.

And you're right: the SAQ's that I visited - two on rue Ste Catherine, one at the Marché Atwater - were terrible for beer.

But all in all, it was a good trip to a terrific city, with lots of "souvenirs" brought home.

Thanks again.
