Mill Street news
Just got word from Steve at Mill Street that they cracked their first sample batch of Coffee Porter yesterday. Assuming they're happy with the results, they'll likely be going into production with it soon.
They'll also be brewing the first batch of their Pale Ale this weekend, and hope to have it ready for sampling in 2-3 weeks.

What the blood clot?
Okay, has anyone had the Organic on draft or in wee bottle form?
You took Fin Du Monde over the Organic? That is really funny. Did you mean it to be?
Stubbies? Is this not one of the worst types of bottle to use. That's why they stopped using them! Ugh! "Hi i'm trendy".
Whatever you do Mill st DO NOT make a plastic stubby bottle. Oh no, now they have the idea!
How about a rubber bottle in the shape of a hockeystick, with a 3-D logo of Con Smithe.
I have high hopes for Mill St's new beers. Marketing is one thing, but the other is a consistant unique product.
My beer prayers are with you. (Bleech!)

Sheryl and I visited Mill Street today and had a taste from their sample keg of Coffee Porter. It's very, very good - dark & rich brown colour, great balance of coffee in the flavour, and a nice hint of hops in the finish. I'll need to give it a few more tastes to be completely sure, but at this point I think I'd place it ahead of the C'est What Coffee Porter. I'm really looking forward to this becoming officially available.
We also tried the Organic Lager, and while neither of us are fans of light pilsner-style beers, we actually found it quite tasty. It has a very fresh flavour, and would be nice on a warm spring or summer afternoon. It also seems to be very popular - during the 45 minutes or so that we were there, 5 or 6 people came in to buy some, including one guy who bought four 6 packs. Considering the fact that one has to trudge through a muddy construction zone to reach the brewery, we found the walk-in traffic pretty impressive, especially on a weekday afternoon.
Anyway, the Porter should be available soon, with the Pale Ale to follow soon after. They'll also be adding a Sparkling Ale to round out their regular line, and they have one special beer that should be out by the spring that I'm not at liberty to divulge, but it's something that most Bar Towellers will likely be very happy to see available...

If you're not at liberty to divulge, you must be one of the owners in which case your comments are meaningless...if you're not an owner, what makes you think that they don't tell everyone about this mystery beer...all in all, a dumb comment on your part meant to portray yourself as some sort of insider privy to information that no one else has...why do I keep getting a bad vive from this brewery?
Rabbit, why are you being so antagonistic over what was meant to be a light-hearted comment?
The reason that I'm not at liberty to mention the details about this beer is simply because Steve asked me not to do so. I have no connection to the brewery - in fact, I'd never met any of the people there until this afternoon, I'd only had a bit of email contact with Steve. And I certainly don't claim to be an "insider". Our conversation just happened to stray onto a topic which led to a mention of the beer in question. I asked Steve if he would be comfortable with me mentioning the details on the Bar Towel, and he asked that I not go into specifics, presumably because they are planning to make an official announcement themselves at some point in the future.
Anyway, given the reaction that my comments have caused, I have to wonder if I should bother posting about ANY beer news that I might learn about in the future lest I once again get pegged as some sort of evil "insider".

Greg:
It would appear to me that if all is on the level as you say, the buzz has begun and one of the oldest marketing ploys known still works. I think whoever you spoke to at Mill Street wants you to spill the barley, er ah beans. Of course, I had to make some serious assumptions to end with that conclusion and since I was not privy to your conversation, I will shut my pie hole now.

Gunny, to be honest, I'm already regreting that I said anything about this. Not because I feel like I've become a pawn in some sort of marketing gimmick for this new beer - in fact, it's quite the contrary.
Given the context of my conversation with Steve, there was no element of "nudge nudge, wink wink" that would suggest I should go ahead and spill the beans. I made the off-handed comment above on my own volition, not thinking of the consequences that it might have, Given the flame-ridden conversations about Mill St. that have taken in place here in the past, I should've been more cautious.
As a result, what was meant as a completely innocent comment on my part has ended up reflecting badly on Mill St. in some people's eyes, which is completely unfair. They don't deserve the suspicion and abuse, and I feel like a shitheel for inadvertantly causing it.

Gunny - thanks for the reply, no harm done.
And you're right about the architecture down in the Distillery District, it's pretty amazing. Just be forewarned that it's pretty messy & muddy down there at the moment, as they're currently doing construction on a lot of the buildings in preparation for the official opening of the complex in May. We also found ourselves in the middle of a movie shoot today, which is apparently a common occurance in the area. But there are a few buildings open to the public, including the brewery and Balzac's Coffee at the south end of the area.
The Distillery District website was recently updated to include a list of events taking place there starting in May and running through until September, including a couple of Jazz events, some art exhibitions and a Festival of Spirits. Sheryl and I expect to be visiting the area a lot this summer.

Greg, give me a break here!
If you are this sensitive on a bloody message board, I imagine you carrying around a safety blanket to snuggle in real life.
Does this "Cheryl" exist? I find it really creepy how you keep mentioning her in most of your posts.
And when people tack on one sentence posts to arrogantly prove a mistake of a post, or in my case with the sheep poo beer, cut through some multi-leveled, double entendre post of mine with a basic general observation. Just don't bother. I'm not straight forward always, and I like that. You don't need to pontificate like some holy beer messaih, and yes Greg you WILL be judged here too!
It's a goddamn message board. So will I. Most can handle criticism from an abstract source such as this board.
Hopefully what will come out of it is some truth. Sometimes you have to sort through some cocky self inflating trash to get it. That's all part of the process.
Don't get defensive from someone questioning your street cred, as out of all the users, what percentage really know you in real life? I bet you it's way less than half.
As for me, when people mention a new product here, what I get is knowledge of that new product.
With that persons judgement of it, I take an enormous grain of salt, and excitidly wait to try it for myself.
Tell "Cherl" if she exists in your head, or not, that Tar Bowel says hi.

Hey, Tar Bowel...
It retrospect, I've gotta agree with you that I over-reacted a bit last night. Although it had less to do with wanting to defend or define my own "street cred" (since I really don't think I have that much in the beer arena), and more to do with trying to deflect the criticism that was being aimed towards Mill Street based on my own loose lips.
I've been participating on online fora of various sorts for close to 20 years now (oops, there I go showing off my "street cred" again!), and I generally know better than to get flustered by this sort of thing. I guess we all have off days.
And as for Sheryl, she's my wife, and she generally joins me on any beer related outings that I make, so guess I mention her without even realizing it. Sorry if it's creeping you out, she's really not very creepy at all.
Anyway, thanks for your perspective. I've enjoyed your contributions to the board so far, you've got a good, off-kilter sense of humour that is needed around here, especially when tempers flare.
