G&M: Ontario’s dated Beer Store model benefits no one

Post by sstackho »

"The McGuinty government is pledging to review outdated liquor laws early in the legislative session that begins this week. MPP Grant Crack, parliamentary assistant to the Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Minister, said the Beer Store’s monopoly will no doubt come up."

Wouldn't it be cool to find out one of these guys has 1000+ ratings on Beer Advocate?

I like that this is finally getting some mainstream press coverage - it's just that the articles all sound the same. Maybe soon something will actually happen.

If the grits reformed the liquour laws, I vote for them in the next election, just for that alone!

So if their platform was:
1) Increased taxes.
2) Legalization of severe beatings of guys named Jeff.
3) Liquor law reform.

You'd vote for them? :) I'm being facetious of course, but my point being that there are much bigger issues out there, and it is unwise to vote for someone based one particular issue. Particularly since they could get elected, realize #3 is harder than they thought, and just do #1 and #2.

That said, I'm for anything that helps improve the beer market in Ontario.

"only companies that make beer in Quebec can sell through convenience stores where most Quebeckers buy beer"

This can't be right.

1. Well, hrmph...
2. Name changes are easy...plus, I'm pretty fast!
3. Dalton 2015!!!

:) You're right. I was exagerating a little. Much bigger issues...our contracts are currently being negotiated with the province...and then there's the whole "health care thing".

The good thing is that it's an issue that doesn't need to be partisan - And unless the oposition were just being jerks, there shouldn't be too much of an issue...

Having said that, I'm sure there would still be some roadblocks, I'm Big Beer would have something to say about it, and try challenging any new laws.

This can't be right.
Wouldn't this be a NAFTA violation? Perhaps it was grandfathered-in.

it is correct, i personally dont think that the Quebec retail system is better then what we have here

the Quebec brewing scene and the way the brewers are represented in the retail system is better, but it really starts with the local breweries

good point...I think Ontario has been slow to the game, but we're certainly getting there...

One offs are great, but there needs to be more good beers in bottles ready to go.

Then again, if there's nowhere to sell them, why put so much energy and money into bottling and retail? A bit of a chicken/egg delemia.

What I meant was that you can buy stuff in convenience stores that isn't brewed in Quebec.

I've seen Guinness in dépanneurs, no? Also, Broue HaHa in Gatineau is selling beers from St Sylvestre and others that have no connection that I know of to PQ. I don't know if those stores are classified differently than any old dépanneurs??

Convenience stores carry more than just Quebec beer....

I know I've personally purchased Hoegaarden and Stella in Montreal.

...which are both owned by Anheuser In Bev, which "brews beer in Quebec."
