Wellington County Cask-Conditioned

Post by old faithful »

Scored a hat trick for quality real ale by sampling County Ale recently at Feathers (the first two: Maclean's Pale Ale and Granite's Peculiar at Volo). An excellent pint of strong brown ale the County was. I saw people ordering the Fuller's ESB, dispensed there through a hand pump, and while I am glad they liked it, the truth (by my lights) is County is the more English-tasting beer due to being cask-conditioned. The County was served a tad cold, but better cold than sour. :) It is easy to let the glass sit and warm a bit, I don't mind that, it is a small price to pay for getting a quality, fresh pint. I like the way this beer, true to style, isn't over-hopped. The hops evidently are earthy English ones, not Chinook or Cascade or Williamette (which in my view do not really suit the brown ale style). The only thing I'd change in County is to give it a little estery character. Neither County, Maclean's Pale nor Peculiar shows a fruity note. This would confer the final English touch. But they are very good as they are. Any English brewer who cares about real ale would be impressed and the only reason I keep talking about England is not through some undue obeisance to the birthplace of fine top-fermented ale but because the best of those beers (in cask form) are amongst the world's great drinks.

They still set the standard, but my hat trick shows we can do as well.

Wellington County have always been one of my favourites for a solid line up of brews, so no doubt the cask ale is nothing short of amazing.

Wish someone around here had a beer engine!

"here" is London, Ontario. No cask ale this side of waterloo, but there is a great new beer bar in London called the Alex P. Keaton. It's in the places section of Ratebeer. Not worth a long trip down the 401 but if you're in London it's definitely the place to go.

Yes, they've asked me for my Weissbier. I've just got to figure out how to get it there so that I don't "net a loss".
Oh, and by the way, I'm presently drinking a Dunkel, a Denison's Dunkel. Tastes pretty good to me. Guess I'll have to go out to my garage, which I keep at 8 degrees C, to get another pint (actually 500ml if Publican is reading this). It's officially available to bars this week. I'll let you know where as soon as it is on tap.

Well looks like I'll have to find another excuse to go home so I can visit Toronto.

Don't you mean you "wee" there 6 times instead of 3. Although, I think wee-wee is the correct, technical term.

I can't wait to have a few pints of Denison's Dunkel. I always had at least one pint of this when I went to the Denison's brewpub. Michael, can I suggest you put it on tap at Cafe Volo.

I'm very glad to tell you that Volo will definitely have it on tap. Just got to time it with a tap becoming free. Will of course advise everyone of ETFPP, Estimated Time of First Pint Poured. (Yes, Joey that also could stand for pee-pee, referring to the action, rather than my beer). This has wandered a long way from the first post!

I think you will find that the ETFP-Pee is typically around an hour or so after ETFPP, but individual results may vary.
