Grand River Pugnacious Pale Ale

Post by cratez »

Thought this was just a one-off for last year's summer OCB feature but I see the Pugnacious is back on store shelves. It's not a crazy blast to the senses but I'll take a fresh and hoppy Grand River beer any time I can get it. Also curious to see if this year's is any different from the previous batch.

Great news - nice to see it back!

It is good to see more offerings on the shelves at the LCBO (especially from Ontario breweries) but this is not one I would buy again.

To each their own, but I haven't been able to get out to Nickel Brook yet to get some Naughty Neighbour and I've really been craving a sessionable pale ale.

my thoughts exactly.

the smell of the river near the brewery, and the thought that they could use that water to brew turned me off after my visit.

If you ever saw the South River you'd never drink the Highlander Pale/Scottish ale either. Fortunately we have developed filters and other water treatment methods that render the source for just about any brewery perfectly safe.

Ground water is the primary source of drinking (and brewing) water in Cambridge.

Grand River? They don't use the river water (there is a sewage treatment plant nearby)... they have an artesian well with some seriously hard water from all the natural filtration through limestone.

yep - crazy-ass limestone water - Cambrige, Guelph, Fergus - all lousy with the stuff...beautiful buildings, though!

that's good that they don't use the Grand, but it's near it and it stinks.

Picked up a single bottle of this Wednesday. Does have the distinct Grand River aroma and taste found in all their beers. I'd rather go with a Naughty Neighbour or Crazy Canuck for a session pale ale.

Not a bad beer at all but and nice to see it so widely available this time around.

Now for my one gripe: we have practically every beer now from GRB which is fantastic, seeing as how a few years ago it was a big deal to get Russian Gun in as a seasonal, but can we please please please get the Mill Race Mild into the LCBO already?

Rob? Bob? I know the BO is going a little APA crazy right now, which is fine, but this truly is my favourite GRB beer, and fresh it's beautiful - one of the most overlooked beers in this province, IMHO. Anything you guys can do to get it into the stores?

I love visiting the brewery, but it sucks having to buy six months of MRM the two times a year I get there.

I'm hoping they have some at the brewery. I'll probably swing by this weekend.
