Members of Barleyment present... The Oktoberfest Homebrew Competition!
In conjunction with Beau's All Natural Brewing Company, the Members of Barleyment are pleased to announce a homebrew competition on September 28, 2012, at Beau's Oktoberfest in Vankleek Hill.
The grand prize winner will get to brew their own recipe at Beau’s and a free entry in the AHA National Homebrew Competition. People’s Choice winner will receive Beau’s merchandise. Both winners earn the great honour of having their name inscribed on the Beau’s cup!
This event is 2 competitions in 1!
The first is a BJCP-sanctioned competition and the second is a People’s Choice competition.
All beer categories in the 2008 BJCP Style Guidelines will be accepted (Categories 1-23).
Each brewer can submit a maximum of one entry per subcategory.
People's Choice Award - In addition to the BJCP judging, all beers submitted will be entered into a “People’s Choice” competition, where the visitors at Oktoberfest will be encouraged to take part in judging beers.
The 2008 BJCP rules will be used - please be sure you are referring to them and not an earlier version!

You are required to enter 6 standard green or brown, regular sized (333ml to 350ml) beer bottles. No swing top lids or bottles with raised lettering will be accepted. There is a $5 entry fee for each beer you enter. With their entries, brewers must attach an Entry/Recipe form (to the first bottle) and bottle ID forms with the additional bottles. Please use a rubber band or string to attach these to your bottles. Recipes are required, but it is not necessary to fill out the recipe section of the entry sheet--digital printouts are also acceptable.

Deadlines & Submissions
All entries must be received by the officials by the end of day on Friday, September 14, 2012. No entries will be accepted after that date. Drop off/mail in locations listed in the FAQ below.
OK, but what if I live in Newfoundland and win?
Beau' s will gladly provide up to $500 in transportation costs to any winner who happens to be from afar.
We need volunteers to help!
The main organizers can be contacted at barrybeadman@gmail.com and alex.sheftel@mail.mcgill.ca. if you want to help. There is lots to do from receiving and recording entries, to stewarding, to judging. Please volunteer to help if you can!
FAQ
Can judges enter the competition?
Yes, absolutely. The organizers just need to make sure you are not judging your own beer.
Can I just submit just 2 or 3 bottles instead of 6, and forget the people’s choice?
Sorry, no.
Can professional brewers enter?
Yes, as long as they brew their beer on a homebrew system, at home. There are a number of Members of Barleyment in various stages of opening their own breweries, and they are welcome to enter as long as they are using a homebrew system at home. As Steve @ Beaus said : “It would be a great boost for their brewery if they won”.
How does one typically send beer to one of these competitions?
Packed very well! Google for help or ask the MoB list, but in general if you wrap each bottle well in bubble wrap, and then pack them into a box also lined with bubble wrap, it should be fine. I have personally shipped 20 beer in box from Germany like that and it worked fine. You may want to label your box “Yeast Samples” since some shippers may not want to ship beer
Can I enter a beer kit?
No, the intent of this competition is that the brewer formulated the recipe. So beer kits either from cans or the large full-wort boxes cannot be entered. But extract brew that involve recipe formulation and actually brewing (not just fermenting) the beer can be entered.
If I win, do I need to brew the same beer at Beaus?
No, you are free to brew pretty much anything you like as long as Beaus can brew it organically. Though you are encouraged to discuss the matter with the folks at Beaus to agree on something.
How should I affix my labels to my bottles?
With an elastic band. Any bottles with glued or tapes labels will be disqualified.
Where do I send my entries?
