The Rhino's Controversy

Post by Cass »

I feel bad for the Rhino with what's going on. I hope it doesn't adversely affect them or their business.

Me too. Chris is a great guy, and I can only imagine how upset he that (that others were upset). I'm sure he's thinking about business, but he genuinely cares about his patrons, too.

I linked their response and apology to my facebook and hopefully others will do that too, to get the word out.

Obviously I wasn't there, but reading their response, it sounds like they handled it really well.

Hopefully the protestors bought a few drinks, as it was certainly kind of the staff to allow them to hand out their pamphlets.

I can't help but think that the situation could have easily escalated into something far more serious.

The social media out lash directed at the Rhino was somewhat shocking. The fact that the 'citizen journalism', which made some pretty serious (and unjustified) assumptions, then got picked up by mass media, is quite troubling.

If this is true, however, it's fairly serious.

That said, I'm glad that this situation was addressed by management.

Absolutely. But last night I saw on CP24's ticker that Rhino was under fire for "hosting" the party. Clearly facts were lost along the way.

While I'm a proponent of free speech, social media is getting a bit out of hand. It's unfortunate that the 'real' journalists stoop to this level in an effort to provide current 'news'. Stuff like the Sandy Hook misinformation (where charges were made) and the crazy Manti Te'o story would've been unbelievable, just a few years ago.

When the dust has settled, someone ought to start a social media cash mob for the Rhino.

They deserve better. I think I'll drop in for a pint or two soon.

While an establishment has the right to refuse to serve people who are offensive, serving them does not constitute hosting in my book.

I'm here right now having a quick half pint with the staff. I'll be back at around 730 if anyone wants to join me. Chris(bartender) said he heard a flash mob is planned for tonight but that could be pure rumour.

Twitter can certainly be a bitch but too many media oulets aren't checking sources which is lazy and helps spread this misinformation...

Good lord. Only in Toronto a costume party could garner so much attention. A lot of people in the world have nothing much more to do then find fault in everything... it was just a party, I very much doubt anyone attending including staff has a racist intention towards Native Canadians... Possibly Cowboys though?

The patrons should have had a pimp & ho instead.

I get that people are upset, and I get why... but one article reported that one guy spent $30 on a taxi to rush over there and complain. That seems like it might be a bit of an over reaction at that point.

As a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, I am deeply offended by this party.

We're a team, not a costume, damnit!

As a 7/8ths white person I feel shamed by this wanton & barbarous spectacle.

Now let's drink some frigging beer. There's a limited time before we mess up this whole planet for good & probably die.
