I've got my two tickets! :D

After having not much new stuff to try out at the York festival anymore (we've been there for the past two years), I'm looking forward to this one.

Will there be stuff like glasses and shirts on sale at all?

In case some of you think it's impossible to get there via public transit, it's a lot easier than you think.

Just head North on the subway to Finch station. Cross the street to the York Region Transit (YRT) station. Take the Bathurst Route 88 bus and get off at Major Mac. Then enjoy your leisurely 15 minute walk to the winery. You'll be good and thirsty by the time you arrive.

How do I know this? I did it last year and doing it again this year.

For YRT schedule information, check out these links...

Returning home

For scheduling purposes, Major Mac is situated about half way between Carrville and Shaftsbury.

Hope to see a lot of you there!

My .02 on the event...

Went there and bought a ticket @ the door for 15 bucks.

Was quite surprised that the price didn't include any samples :o
The sample tickets were 10 for 5.00 / 20 for 10.00 and the beer samples were 2 tickets each.

It was an interesting crowd, as there were a lot of "beautiful people" there, and it seemed more like an upscale party than a beer tasting.

Seems to me that part of town has a higher income bracket,
as we noticed that whle looking for plants at local farms etc, the prices were quite higher...

The only beers that I tried that were new to me were the
Church Key Lift Lock, King Dark, and Cameron's Dark
(which apparently came out a month ago)
I enjoyed all of them and had repeats of the Church Key Cranberry, Denison's Dunkel, Church Key Maple and the Hockley Valley Dark.

It was sad to hear that Hockley's bottler went under so those amazing big bottles are no longer being produced...

Had a long talk with Philip the owner / brewmaster from King, very nice fellow.

He wasn't aware of Premier Gourmet and I think his wife was upset with me their plans next weekend now involve a trip to Buffalo :D

Cheers,

Dave

Not counting last weekends Church Key Spring Revival, this is the third beer festival I've been to. The first two were the 2003 and 2004 festivals at Fort York. I basically expected a smaller Fort York scenario but with better beer all around and that was the case.

I was a little surprised too that no samples came with the admission price. Something I find continually frustrating is that tickets can not be bought back when you have leftovers. I only had three pairs left, $3, so it wasn't a high amount, but I think there is a little irresponsibility there to force the patrons decision on eating the tickets or consume more beer. I shouldn't have to go around to other patrons to ask if they'll buy my tickets. In the end I chucked them into a pot at the door for some children's charity.

The food cost was a little high. I suppose that was to keep things simple with the different items available. If you're going to charge $4 for a sausage or a hamburger then it should include fries (which were available as an item with fish.)

With one exception (Dension's Weissebeer) I sampled everything I haven't had before besides dark beers (yuck!). Some beers I'm going to try again are McAuslan Griffon Red Ale and Mill St. Organic. My girlfriend really liked Brick's Bambay. I only had a couple of sips from her cup so I'm undecided on it. It's definitely different. I know I'll be giving it a full try when she picks up a case in the near future. She was also very happy to find out that Waupoos Cider will be available for purchase at the LCBO in about six weeks.

It was pretty cool that some of the brewers were there. I did manage to speak with Michael, the one man show at Denison's. I was saddened to hear that bottling isn't something we're going to see for a while, if at all. I hope Magnotta can get theirs bottled at some point soon. Paulaner is the closest I've found available to them but it's not quite the same.

The band was pretty good besides the ornery bass player. :D

All their beers are bottled as far as I know....you should swing by their brewery in Vaughan. You can get all their True north offerings as well as the altbier and the IPA in singles.

It's their Wunderweisse that I want. As far as I know Magnotta isn't bottling that yet. As much as it's always better to have it on tap, it would be nice to be able to kick back at home and enjoy a bottle or three. 8)

I tried either their lager or their cream ale at one of the two past Beer Festivals at Fort York and had some difficulty drinking it.

A beer-based grapefruit drink that Brick launched last summer. I tried it at the St. Lawrence festival, and I actually liked it as far as alcoholic fruit drinks go. It reminded me Ting mixed with beer. Not for everyone, but it's a refreshing summer drink.

Lister,
It was good to meet you and chat. I now realise that I may have given the wrong impression about bottling and want to clarify the matter before the whole world reads your post. Bottling is very definitely in my plans - has been for two years. However, I just don't want to keep issuing ETAs and then having to revise them. As Perry Mason will attest, when you are a one or two person show, even simple hurdles can postpone things for a very long time. When you are a contract brewer, meaning that you use another brewery's facilities and licence to produce your beer, there are a number of very important and far-reaching decisions to make when applying for LCBO approval. As an example, the subject of who is allowed to deliver my beer becomes under fresh scrutiny. I cannot go into more details now as it's complicated, but wanted to make sure that the only definite thing that can be said about my bottling plan is that it hasn't happened yet!

And I am glad to hear that Michael, as are many others, I'm sure!

I will continue my anxious wait.
