Fascinating article in the NYT today, documenting the startup of Lebanon's first microbrewery. The brewing equipment was imported from Canada!

I was in Lebanon back in 2009 before a trip to Turkey and had three of their 961 beers. I was surprised that they were all quite good...well, actually two were just average at the time. Still much better than Almaza, the macro beer of Lebanon.
I was pleased to see their beers in NY state recently and they seem to have improved.
Was sad I never picked up any caps/shirts/pint glasses or swag back when I was there.
As for Lebanon...
It is a fantastic country, one of the most exciting places I've been. They do suffer as near-constant issues with neighbours and nearby countries turn people away - Syria, Egypt. Sure, therre are tanks and armed guards in many areas and you have to go through metal detectors to get into their "CDB" downtown area...but, that's not se different really than many other countries.
It's a tiny country, where if you go north, you are in the headquarters of Hezbollah, but people in the area love them as they build the schools, hospitals and infrastructure, it's quite interesting.
Beirut is totally different than the rest of the country. You see billboards with lingerie-clad women on them on your drive from the airport.
Unless they've moved, 961 Beer is in an area of the city called Gemmayzeh. Going out there at night is like going to the club district in Toronto, except everyone is hotter and the cars are fancier. When I was walking down a street there one night, a limo came by, with girls standing out of the sunroof drinking and flashing the bystanders.
Best shisha I've ever had too. Some really good wines come from Lebanon too.
If Syria wasn't so unstable right now, I'd be telling everyone to go visit Lebanon.
