Most beer stores carry all the Wellingtons except for the Imperial stout, if the LCBO stops carrying that then we will all be driving to Guelph.

I try to go to the stores that are self serve, that way I can pick through the stock to get the freshest supply. the problem with this is I am now left with the picked through ones now in my local stores, guess that was a little self defeating :(

I haven't sought it out seriously but the LCBO in meadowlands, at dundurn, and westdale near the east side marios (or is that considered dundas?) haven't had it. I usually don't head to the eastern part of the city but if there were a special beer out there, I would.
It appears that there are no LC's in the Hamilton area that carry it. Brantford, Mississauga or Guelph appear to be your closest bets.

I would check out the LCBO product search engine just to get a feel for where it is and then go from there. It's not always accurate, especially if it's only showing a couple of units, but you can always call and double-check before journeying out to pick it up. It helps to save aimless wandering and the frustration of fruitless searches.

What über-sucks about the Welly Stout being pulled back is, you've now got Lion Stout (labelled at the LCBO as Sinha Stout) being brought in all the way from Sri Lanka... regardless it's priced at only $1.85, while it is in many repects comparably good or excelling other stouts, with no empties to return (something the industry hates dealing with.)

It's a slightly different style of Stout but I can see once again Canadian-made goods are being displaced with cheaper, more profitable foreign counterparts, sadly.

I would like if it were possible to have a 'stout tasting' of available, **interesting** selections, but there are only about 6 or 7 I could barely scrape together from the past year, including discontinued ones:

Rogue Chocolate, Sam Smith OS & IS, DFH Chicory - 4 - fleeting seasonal releases, don't blink or you miss 'em!
SI Tsarina - 1 - ex. limited private order
St Amby, Wellington - 2 you can usually find
Sinha (Lion) - 1 at LCBO for now.

A couple of Carribbean ones, Dragon and Royal, maybe I'll try these but they look so-so.
(I guess Guinness Draught is a Stout, so that's #10 if we include all categories.)

Not a great representation of good stouts to be found. Without any critical mass there will likely be no awareness of the Stout or the Imperial Stout style.

Only other Ontario stouts I've had in the last while include Amsterdam's Irish Stout and the Black Oak Chocolate Cherry Stout. Both decent offerings, but not in the same league as some of the others listed. And as far as I know, they aren't available in bottles....

The Amsterdam stout is available in bottles at the brewery, and I think Black Oak might've done a limited bottling of the Chocolate Cherry - although I might be getting in confused with the Nutcracker.

Black Oak did bottle the Chocolate Cherry Stout last winter (or the year before?). I still have a couple bottles, although I've had mixed results with ageing other black oak seasonals.

Yes, it's sad that we've lost several Ontario stouts that we had ten years ago, such as:

Conner's Imperial Stout
Niagara Brock's Extra Stout
Hart Hardy Stout
Upper Canada Colonial Stout
Glatt Brothers Espresso Stout

Only others I can think of, albeit draught only, are:

Durham Black Katt

Granite Keefe's Irish--you should be able to get this in a growler at the brewery and add it to your tasting.

Good to remember all these, well done.

Wasn't there a stout made in Newmarket about 10 years ago..?

They were all excellent.

What ever happened to that Glatt operation? Did it continue possibly in an altered form?

Glatt brother's was located here in London. The closed down about 6 years ago, due to hardships getting their product listed with the LCBO, amongst other things.

They made about 15 different beers.

I phoned the former owner of the brewery about 6 months ago, and while he's still active in the scene, he doesn't think he'll get back into brewing.

Thanks very much. Maybe he will get back into brewing some day, I found their beers very good and with character.
