I picked up a six of both the Amber and Pilsner and enjoyed them this week on the back patio. Certainly beers I would pick up on a regular basis from The Beer Store.

I am curious, however about the "CQA" designation, "Craft Quality Assured". Certainly this is an internal marketing tactic and not something bigger with the OCB. How are these beers "quality assured"?

I sampled the Pilsner recently and was somewhat disappointed. There is a noticeable light bitterness in the finish but apart from that it seemed not that different from a number of Ontario craft beers (ale and lager). The signature "sandy/grainy" malt flavor of these beers is one I can't warm too. I thought the Stonehammer pilsener sampled recently at C'est What was quite a bit better. However I'll try the Amber, perhaps that will do it for me.

The Amber is just like that for me (wish I could slide one to all of you right now) Clean, very light pleasant aroma the best trait, showing a hint apple. The flavor - some butterscotch, sweet malty graininess, not too much in the hops. It is a bit soapy and drying on the palate. Compared to typical craft beers I enjoy it leaves a persistent dry mouth feeling. The next day was similar but maybe not as bad, maybe I was expecting it - so that's the one definite fault for me: this Amber just plain has a certain MolBatt mouthfeel & finish I'd generally avoid.

Might like to sample the other two "CQA" beers, like you OF hoping for the best.

I hope the Andechs returns. This was a rich-tasting malty helles with a unique hop accent.

Of the Brick current line-up, I like Waterloo Dark which is an excellent dark beer, well-flavoured but not satiating. The Brick bock when available is possibly Ontario's best.

I'll try the Honey Red and Amber soon. When I tasted the Pilsner a number of others really liked it. As always with beer, different strokes...

Just got a 6 of the pilsner from the beer store. It is really soft, fresh, and gentle. Hopped subtley (sp?), slightly floral/grassy, with minute bread notes. Very enjoyable and VERY good for summer quenching. Well done Brick!

I tried the other two and liked the Honey one the best, it had a nice body, good flavor and less of the "sandy/grainy" taste I find in the other two.

Picked up recently too some Conners Bitter. Not bad, but seems different from the original and even the version Brick brewed for a while after the purchase. In particular I don't get any estery notes. The yeast background and some of the malt flavors seem similar to some of Brick's other beers (not unexpected).

I still like Waterloo Dark best of the current range.

Had another fine dark beer recently in Waterloo, it was English Ale as brewed by Gold Crown and is available currently on draft at the restaurants in the adjacent Heuether Hotel. That was really good, creamy fresh with nuanced flavors but indeed English in style. Nicely done.

Gold Crown has been around for a while. They are the bottling half of the Lion/Heuther Brewing in Waterloo.

I've yet to have anything really remarkable at the Huether, save for a seasonal maple ale... though the English Ale Oldfaithful mentions isn't terrible.

I don't think Gold Crown is available anywhere except the brewery.

I believe I've seen a few Gold Crown flavours at the LC on Northfield Drive.
