I revisited this lager this week. I went to pick some up from the brewer when I was informed the recipe for this lager was "tweeked" to remove some sweetness and to bring up the hops a tad.
As a confirmed lager hound I was very pleased with the results. With this change the new Charleston lager is a very good representation of the Dortmunder style ...possibly a tad maltier. While it is no malt bomb it certainly is malt biased but now the sweetness of that rich Briess Bonlander Munich malt is kept from cloying with some substantial long-boil nobel hopping. The result is a delicious malty lager with a citrus, lemony snap to the finish......much like you may get from a Munich helles but a tad heavier.
If they keep this recipie in production, I will be stocking this lager regularly in my beer fridge. Although not advertised as such I belive this is Ontario's only Dortmunder after Northern edelbreau was deleted.
For the bar towelers who tried this lager in its infancy when it seemed too sweet I urge you to try the newly formulated version...particularly if you like traditional malty lagers.
