I had occasion to be in DT Waterloo last week and I noticed a new Grain silo at the back of the Gold Crown brewery ( they supply the Heuther hotel with the draft beer it serves)....so I decided to stop in and see what's going on...all new graphics for some of their beers seem to indicate they may soon market locally in TBS and in talking to a brewery employee all the brews are now 100% all barley malt grist milled at the brewery for their worts, no adjuncts, no chemical and unpasturized....the owner advertises his beers as being in line with the Bavarian purity law.
I bought the King's Pilsner, Lion Lager and new Premium lager as I was assured all the bottled stock in their fridge was less than a week old.
I was surprized at the improvemnt I tasted in these beers....now be reminded these are not mouth rocking big beers but they ARE well enough made all malt, clean, fresh, small batch micro lagers. They may not rock your world but for their price ( $0.90 a beer for pilsner and $1.25 a bottle for the Lion and premium) this is a good deal for an all grain purity law lager.
Taste? I had a pilsner last night it was fresh tasting, sharp in hopping with a biscuity snap in the finish....not a Czech pils but a decent Canadian rendition and when fresh, a respectable and drinkable all grain Pils... for the price, I'll have this in the fridge rather than Blue or commercial light pils.
The Lion lager is a sharply hopped light bodied German-styled amber...I didn't care for it but it was clean decent enough
The Premium is new and is a real find for me at least...after I lost my favorite domestic edelhell ( edelbrau from the defunct Northern Breweries) it was nice to discover this new Gold Crown Premium was a decent enough domestic dortmunder hell...grainy, lemony...sharp cider-like finish...at 5.3%ABV fairly satisfying and refreshing.
