A few BarTowellers were extremely generous in offering to trade this Rare Bird to me.

I found it tasted rather like Brio Chinotto, minus the cloyimg sweetness & Mui Plus the hop bitterness. I'm sure the spicing has something to do with my tasting impression. Interesting!

I was pleasantly surprised to see that they brought this one back again this year. And the particular location I went into had piles of it, so it probably won't be the rarity it was last time.

Does the LCBO buy so many Wychwood beers on the sole basis of their oh-so-wacky names?

not sure about the names, but we all know they don't buy them based on quality. :(

By the way sstackho, the LCBO can't really say 'wacky names' because 'wacky' implies 'mental incompetency' and is therefore politically insensitive to the billions of horribly afflicted Ontarians (see: Delirium Tremens.)

So...... perhaps the sole LCBO criteria for buying Wychwood beers would be the "Whimsical, offbeat" names.

Given that I wonder what chance an agent would have of getting something like "Republican Ale" on the shelves

How true about the LCBO worship of political correctness...sage advice when your internal operational policies are focused at using a government retail monopoly to convey the "correct" political messages....Like "affirmative action" and "diversity" in everything but beer selection..

Is everyone here forgetting that this stuff was all over the place last year? or is it just me?

I could have sworn that this was out around the same time last year, and there wasn't much fuss about it?!

Considering that most of this thread was written at almost exactly the same time last year, I don't think anyone has forgotten. Someone just revived the thread to let people know that it's back.

I thought it was OK last year, so I may pick up a bottle or two.

It was only rare last year for the first while then second shipments showed up everywhere.

Looks like they dumped it this year.....even the normally ignored stores outside GTA are getting 100-200 bottles...looks like they really believe in the peotential/popularity of this beer...as someone stated here earlier, that is an LCBO purchasing perception probably spawned by the perceived belief in the sales value of a fancy label

It's an OK beer....but pricey for what you get...and there sure as hell are lots of other warming crafted seasonals that would be more popular than this offering...I guess those beers just don't have the luck of the draw... or a fancy attractive package... or the right paperwork... or the right sized font on the label.. or the right cartons etc...

I'm seriously looking, and when I find the culprit it will be death by a thousand paper cuts. The pen is mightier than the sword

I picked up a couple of bottles last week and then opened one up one night. It's tasty, but only to a point. For my tastes, it would have been better as a standard-sized 340mL bottle than the 500mL bottle it's in. I like the spiciness of it, but it starts to get a bit sickly sweet after awhile.

With the second bottle, I'll probably get someone to share it.

I enjoyed this stuff a lot last year. It really hit the spot Christmas Eve sitting on the couch with the girlfriend and the relatively newborn daughter, watching "It's A Wonderful Life" with only the Christmas Tree lighting the room.

Need to get some this year. The spices were excellent, as with all Wychwood brews it seemed to lack ideal body but not to a great degree. A pretty good beer.
