Both Hop Devil and Storm King as well as Whirlwind were previous LCBO seasonal releases many years ago. With no prospect of onging business and the labelling and packaging hassles, Victory just called it a day in Canada. They're willing to listen if we can make a case for them to come back to the market and the prospect of a number of U.S. micro general listings may make it more attractive to them...we'll see.

Well all this talk of Victory's fine brews (OK I started it) made me dip into my cellar. Just had 3 Storm Kings and 2 Old Horizontals. Well I'm fighting my way not to be horizontal. The Karma is good. Roland and Russel through very hard work and the right timing has paved the way. Very well done.
I've already run out of the two cases of Southern Tier Unearthly IPA I got from them last year. The only IPAs I have left is 6 bombers of Three Floyd's Dreadnaught I got from Dark Lord day in Munster, Indiana last year and I won't crank these open yet.
Look forward to Southern Tier IPA. The first general listing American Craft IPA. The LCBO has seen the light (well at least the exchange rate)

Actually, it will be a matter of timing as to whether Southern Tier will be the first General Listing U.S. IPA in the market....the LCBO has added Dogfish Head 60 MInute IPA to the General List and, on an unrelated note, Rogue Dead Guy Ale...both will be in 6-packs of 355ml. I work hard as well...Enjoy!!!

Good work, my fellow! I'll look forward to buying copious amount of both of these! I didn't know the dead guy came in 330ml.esprit wrote:Actually, it will be a matter of timing as to whether Southern Tier will be the first General Listing U.S. IPA in the market....the LCBO has added Dogfish Head 60 MInute IPA to the General List and, on an unrelated note, Rogue Dead Guy Ale...both will be in 6-packs of 355ml. The extra bonus with all three of these beers being added to the general list, it should make private orders from those breweries much easier. As each will be making regular shipments to the LCBO it shouldn't be too hard for them to add a few cases of one of their other beers amongst the palettes.
I don't always piss in a bottle but when I do...I prefer to call it Dos Equis.
WOW, we will just be revelling in resiny, citrusy hop goodness this year -- I do miss having some real IPA in the house and it may encourage the local scene as well. I also like how casually Peter mentions the 60 minute - like he isn't aware we all think this is a big deal! Good stuff & appreciate the hard work.esprit wrote:matter of timing as to whether Southern Tier will be the first General Listing U.S. IPA in the market....the LCBO has added Dogfish Head 60 MInute IPA to the General List... 6-packs of 355ml.

Wow if those Dead Guys are OLD dead guys you better watch they are not going soft. That's a beer I do really prefer in the first 4-6 months - glad we at least agree on one beer though, LOL.lister wrote:Sweet on the Dead Guy! Now I can finish off the remaining bombers I have....
In Beerum Veritas
They are older than 4-6 months but I haven't noticed any major degradation in them but then again I haven't had a fresh one since they last hit the shelves. Maybe I'll save one bomber for a blind taste test.Belgian wrote:Wow if those Dead Guys are OLD dead guys you better watch they are not going soft. Actually I think we agree on many fine beers. Denison's Weisse is another. Plain Irish Porter. Nutcracker. There's probably a whole list we agree on without even wandering into the fruit aisle.

The LCBO put out a call for US micros in their "2007/08 Beers & Special Markets Product Needs Letter" issued in March/07, with a plan to release them to general list around April/08. I'm assuming that's how these listings came about.StevenThrasher wrote:And yeah what happened? Several general listings for American craft brews at once.
Congrats on the listings, Peter. Looking forward to drinking lots of DFH60 this summer...

I know what happened with DFH 60 Min IPA... I submitted this question to the blog that was soliciting questions for the LCBO to answer:
"Also, why wasn't Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA added to the general listing considering its rapid sellout as a seasonal offering?"
Clearly, they didn't have a good answer, so they just decided it would be easier to add it, instead. So, you can all thank me.
Seriously though, Peter that's great news! I have a slight preference for DFH 60 over Southern Tier IPA. It's great to know that I'll be able to buy a lot of each to compare them again and again.
BTW, this announcement deserves a thread of its own!

This will really open the eyes of a lot of Ontario beer lovers and hopefully expand their palettes. In my opinion it is only recently (last 2-3 years, generally) that Ontario micros are even beginning to make interesting beer. The US market has been at it for quite some time and maybe this will make it easier for the Ontario brewer to work with a more informed customer. I'm of course not talking about Bar Towel folk as we're the type of people who drive to NY state or Michigan just to sample the good stuff. Once the mass market get a hold of some of these brews it may really make a difference.
I know for a fact that some Ontario micros are not liking this move to US listings but if they're really confident in their own product and practices this will just make their job easier in the long run. After all we know the LCBO won't let this good thing last too long anyways right?
