Considering those two beers are rated 90 and 83 on Ratebeer I'd suggest they're more than a bit better than average.
To be fair, the range of beers many of us are usually drinking may "average" closer to the 75th percentile than the 50th - so we can say it's a "practical average", not a "general" one that includes every obscure Bosnian or Chinese lager some guy posted a rating on. "Average" is in relation to the person's palate.

I do think we get blasé about great beers though, in a beer world spoiled with both range of selection and extravagant styles (many of the latter which I shake my head at...)

Good point, Belgian. Either way, there's no question they're better than average. The Dogfish Head 60 is my "desert island" beer, and I can't wait for that one to come out.

ST IPA. I find I actually enjoy this more when it's a bit colder than it should be.

I am in Yellowknife right now and I am enjoying a Kwak. Its mostly wine up here...but beer selection comes and goes but for the last year Kwak has been a staple here at the two beer/wine stores. That's about the only variety ... they do have Leffe but that's it for Belgian imports.

Dave :)

I wonder if those are year round offerings or just summer? I'm guessing inventory and supply up there are substantially affected by weather.
I don't always piss in a bottle but when I do...I prefer to call it Dos Equis.

Taking advantage of privatized liquor stores in Alberta tonight. Started with a Wild Rose Velvet Fog, followed by a Nelson Paddywhack IPA, Ayinger Ur-Weisse and a Lost Coast 8 Ball stout.

Kwak up here has been offered pretty steady for the last year and a half. In the past, summer, fall, winter it doesn't matter, from what was told to me by the staff at the stores. They buy "whatever is available" in BC. I have tried over the last six years to try and order something (which you can) but they tell me if your item shows up on a list, then they will get it.

They did have Karmeliet Tripel for about two years steady but sadly it has gone.

Price wise, Kwak is 15 bucks for the four pack, IMO its really no different price wise then in Ontario.

Yesterday I had Rogue Dead Guy, which i could drink all night long. I followed it up with Bad Hare Day, which is a double IPA made by Alley Kat Brewing out in Alberta. I've only had a couple beers by these guys, but I really like what I've seen so far, and would recommend trying them out if you get the chance. I know Volo carries the Old Deutronomy barley wine for sure.

Considering those tub cans were discontinued when the brewery went bankrupt, therefore they are really old, and it is a light beer, it should be awful!

I just had a new bottle of it (from the re-launch of the 5 brands) - there was nothing off putting about it. Oh it was watery and I do not want to have it again, but it was far better than any macro light beer I have ever tried. I am trying to re-rate these things with an open mind and so far (I've had the Light, Lager, and Tiverton Dark Lager), there is nothing "off" about them. I even went so far to say I'd have the dark again. Surprising, but remove yourself from all the baggage that the Steelback name carries, and you might be surprised. But apart from the dark, nothing to celebrate either...

I'll be finishing off my Dead Guy's tonight and then having a good Canadian brew or two at the Rhino before the TFC game tomorrow.

Tankhouse in the bottle. It's good but I prefer the draft, which always reminds me of sampling American Pale Ales (as they came to be called) in California in the 1990's.

Tankhouse is one of our best beers, a kind of special bitter. I'd be interested to try more of a session from Mill Street, say at 4% abv but otherwise made with a similar profile to Tankhouse.

I know it isn't Tankhouse, but Grand RIver make several that you can session.
