its 1.25 hours to Peterborough from my place much shorter than London, and no I don't drive with a high alcohol in system and my wife and kids were not interested in the 40 minutes round trip drive to see your apartment in lieu of eating supper at home, and you didnt leave a phone number on multiple requests
but I am usually here in Toronto on your regular visits here with growlers, if you ever want to make firm plans

+1 on the quality of the Square Nail Pale Ale. Grabbed a growler last weekend and happily put it away with a good meal. Looking forward to trying some of the others and will probably grab something of whats available to go with Thanksgiving dinner.

well yes I have been following
but again no phone number connects, no working web site with hours
and while there was a plan to serve a few beers on a deck--has that actually materialized?

They were open 'til 9 last night. There were a few people on the patio when I stopped by at about 6:30. Still just growlers (and half-pints) of the Wheat and Pale, although the House Ale could be available today.
There were a couple of topless cans (mmmm . . . topless cans) that looked like they're for the House Ale sitting on the counter. When I asked about them, I was told that they do have an in-house canning line.

Ah. Then you must've seen the loud drunk chick at the bar. She was having fun and apparently enjoying the beer.

Enjoyed this with Thanksgiving dinner yesterday. As said before in an earlier post, nice graininess and some toast. Decent well made beer, but not near in the same league as the Square Nail Pale Ale. Doesn't have the same distinctiveness, so its good but not memorable in the same way.

the website still doesn't seem to exist, but they do have a phone now: (705) 874-5743. looks like they're open until 11 tonight, and you can call for other info. the listing and my first two reviews are up on BA for anyone who is curious. got some press coverage too in the peterborough examiner and quid novis (same article on both, but the PE wants a registration and the other does not)

as of saturday they had the oc rouse wheat and square nail in growlers. i was told that the house ale would be in growlers the following day, but don't know if that happened. the house ale will also be in 500ml cans at the lcbo and beer store in the not-too-distant future. the square nail and house ale will be regulars, with the rest as a rotating selection of seasonals coming out over the next year.

the rouse is a decent wheat and i quite enjoyed the square nail. will be nice to see how they develop.

Tried the House Ale this evening. It's certainly not a beer that's gonna knock any Bartowellers on their asses, but it is something that will appeal to the mainstream. It has a little pilsner malt in the flavour, and some fresh, earthy hops in the finish, and makes for a nice after hockey beer.

I also understand that Jon made a delivery to Volo today - I'm assuming the Pale Ale.

They still seem quite busy on site - they're moving a lot of growlers.

Finally, the rumour is that the stout (as a seasonal) is next.

I got a few minutes before the store opens so I thought that I would clear up a few items.

Our next seasonal brand will be Henry's Irish Ale. Henry Calcutt, an Irishman, started Calcutt Brewery in the early 1860's here in Peterborough.
The brewery closed as a result of prohibition in the 1920's. Henry is six feet under in Little Lake Cemetery beside the banks of the Otonabee River. Thought that it would be nice to name a beer after him. The final pitch of yeast from the Irish Ale will be used to ferment Stonewall Stout which will come out in March. We may follow that with a Bitter or perhaps a Brown Ale in April.

Kelly, the drunk chic at the bar, gave me a $10 tip. She loves beer and The Band. What more can I say.

Thanks to all the Bartowel, Ratebeer and Beer Advocate folks who have stopped by over the last two weeks. Thanks also to Ralph at Bar Volo. Your support of good beer is much appreciated.

I am happy with the beer that we have produced. The recipes and process will be tweaked over time. The Square Nail tested out at 5.9% in the LCBO lab. The OG of the next brew will be slightly less with the hops remaining the same. We won't see the O.C. Rouse again until next May.
The House Ale will be in continuous production year round and available in 473 ml cans in the near future. The House will be going into the Beerstore (locally) before Christmas and into the LCBO system in the New Year. The House is where I want it to be stylistically, volume sales are important. Real IPA will be an expensive beer to produce for "all seven of you".

That is it for now. I am sure that I missed something. The store is open and we need to package beer.

Jon

Anyone checked out the Publican House lately? Anything new? I'll be in Peterborough for a few days over the holidays. I'll be dropping by sometime to pick up a growler or two of the Square Nail.
