After my 1750 dollar take over the last two days I think I will be drinking compliments of the OLG for a few months. I love football season.
And the OLG will certainly be drinking compliments of our generous contributions. Were they all drunk when they replaced the Super 7 with Lotto MAX?
My brother is an actuary in training. He ran some numbers and found out that Lotto MAX is harder to win (at least for the jackpot) yet it costs more than Super 7 or even 6/49.

His conclusion: not worth it.

That's right, the odds to win a jackpot was better with Super 7, you had to pick 7 numbers among 47. Now with Lotto MAX you still pick 7 numbers but there are 49 numbers to choose from. To me, Lotto MAX is just an excuse to make more money by giving less back.

--

While having the appearance of giving more back ;) It's clever.

I will not be playing lotto max because it's five dollars per ticket.
I will NOT sacrifice any more beer money on Lotto Max.

I'm surprised by how many people are innumerate, even amongst my working peers (automotive engineering). I may toss in for the odd work pool, but I pretty much stopped playing 6/49 when they increased it to $2/play and I sure as heck won't be buying these tickets.

More beer money now :)

Ahhh, there it is. I was looking at the odds to win a Lotto Max payout, and it said the odds were 1 in 28,000,000, which is significantly higher than the 1 in 21,000,000 million odds of winning the Super 7, and twice as high as winning the 6/49. I couldn't figure out why the Lotto Max was so much higher, but I did not notice that they increased the spread of numbers.

Lotto Max is definitely a scam. Then again the most of the OLG's odds are total scams. The existence of the OLG monopoly kills the gambling scene in this province just as much as the LCBO kills the beer scene. If I had to choose between private casinos and private beer stores it would certainly be a very tough decision to make.

I have a long ass night of work ahead of me, so I decided to break in to the Propeller stash my folks brought back from 'Scotia for me.

Tonight's victim is a Propeller Pale Ale, which I hadn't actually tried before (last time I was in Halifax it was sitting beside the IPA in the NSLC... and since it's a real IPA, grabbing that was a no-brainer).

My take:

Good and bitter, well balanced malt and hops, straw in the aroma. If you enjoy pale ales, this is a good pale ale and you should drink some when you get a chance.

Really, I don't know that I've had any bad beer from the good folks at Propeller (even when the LCBO doesn't store it right and sits on it for way too long, it's still pretty good).

Got through about half a growler of Church Key West Coast Pale Ale tonight. Very tasty stuff. Quite hoppy and fruity. I'm looking forward to finishing it off tomorrow after work.

As a side note, my folks just got back from a trip to New England and brought me back lots of good looking stuff that I can't wait to dig into. Off the top of my head, I'll soon be trying: Dogfish Head 90, Southern Tier Pumpking, Ommegang Three Philosophers, Strike Out Stout, Blue Point RastafaRye, Whale's Tail Pale Ale, ... and three or four more bombers that I can't remember. I'm excited!

And the idea of a 5-dollar lottery ticket seems to come from the minds of those with deep pockets, the 'priveleged' OLG who must assume their customers even HAVE that kind of betting funds to play on such poor odds.

Chin chin! I'm getting some Malted Corpse and Hop Nouveau on the way home... I will 'gamble' on one bottle of each.

Was in Toronto for the day so went to steam whistle. Not usually a big fan but fresh I really like the taste of their beer. After went to Ces't What and drank anything with hop in the name and 2 pints of #9 which I will buy more of when it becomes regularily available.

Trafalgar Hop Nouveau. I'm really enjoying it!! It is the finest Trafalgar product I've had so far. Bottled Sept 21, delivered Sept 25 and enjoyed Sept 29. Fantastic!

Tonight seemed like a good night for porters:

Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald

Southern Tier Porter Dark

Troeg's Dead Reckoning Porter

If I had to rank them:

Gold: Eddy Fitz

Silver: Troeg's

Bronze: N/A

It was tough though. The Edmund Fitz was easily the most representative of the style and a solid, highly enjoyable porter.

Troeg's Dead Reckoning Porter was fantastic, so hoppy, but I don't think I would have guess it was a porter if I drank it blind. But who cares? It was phenomenal.

The Southern Tier Porter Dark was a disappointment. It's a shame that, after a great start with the IPA, the LCBO seem to be bringing in some of Southern Tier's weaker offerings. I was severely underwhelmed. It smelled funky. The taste was passable. And really, it wasn't a repeater for me.

(Thanks to bobsy for two out of the three.)

I hope you have finished your GL Pumpkin and any St Ambroise you have, because the Southern Tier Pumpking will have you worshiping the pumpkin god.

I hit up Volo with a fellow BTer. We had Church-Key's Scarlet Pils, Mikeller Jackie Brown, Vapeur Cochonette and Great Divide Hibernation. The Mikeller and Great Divide taste excellent right now, and I'd highly recommend them. Cochonette is pretty poor, and I'm not sure what universe the Church-Key is a pils in, but there ya go.

The food at Volo was excellent. I love that place!
