Caps: To Boil or Not to boil

Post by jaymack »

Sorry if it's been discussed previously, curious to know what everyone does.

I've never actually done it, fearing I may damage the liner inside the cap (as I've read can happen).

I used to little boil them, but had an issue once so now soak'em in star san or other sanitizer.

My name is Patrick, and I'm a boiler. Sometimes I find the rubber inside gets a little loose, but haven't encountered anything too serious yet.

Just curious, what is the sanitization proceess when you are using belgian corks and cages. How do you sanitize the corks?

caps and corks get a soak in sanitizer. much easier than boiling.

Initially I used 175F water for 20 minutes or so... but haven't bothered for quite some time.

I've never had an issue... I let you know if that comes back to bite me!

whether it's caps or corks, they get a quick soak in star san solution, and then I shake off the excess right before capping/corking.

you definitely don't want to saturate the cork, so boiling them or soaking for an excessive time period is ill advised.
