Hops Direct

Post by cannondale »

Anyone have experience ordering hops from http://www.hopsdirect.com and have any comments on service, turnaround, product quality, shipping rates, etc.? They indicate USPS as a shipping option, but that it is not available to all regions. At, for example, $8.75 USD for a pound of cascade pellets, the pricing is certainly right.

I've ordered from Hops Direct twice, each order for 4 lbs of hops. They used USPS after I requested it on the order form. It took about two weeks each time.

Shipping was around $25.00 for each order which pegged it at about C$1.25 per ounce all told by my count, not including the ounce or two each pound was over. No duty or tax either time.

I wouldn't hesitate to order from them again.

I recently ordered 3 lbs of fresh leaves & 2 lbs of pellets... I think the shipping was around $30 USPS. It arrived ~7 business days after the visa transaction IIRC.

One lb was Centennial... I haven't openned them. :-?

A few options here as well:
http://www.beerandwinefilter.com/

If people wanted to split 5# bags, it might be an option for homebrewers.

"# Hops from Puterbaugh Farms for the home-brewer, Brew-On-Premiss, or Microbrewery.
# 30 varieties of T90 Hop Pellets and 11 varieties of Leaf Hops available from stock.
# 5 lb foil bags (Pellets) or 1 lb foil bags (Leaf), vacuum-packed at the farm:
# 5# Pellet Varieties: Amarillo, Bravo, Bullion, Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, Cluster, Fuggle, Galena, US Golding, US Hallertau, Liberty, US Magnum, Mt. Hood, Gr Northern Brewer, Nugget, Perle, Cz Saaz, US Saaz, Sorachi Ace, US Tettnanger, Gr Tettnanger and Willamette.
# 1# Leaf Varieties: Cascade, Fuggle and Willamette."

Derek if there's enough interest to make it worthwhile, I'm in. I'm planning to brew some DIPA's once the weather starts to warm a little, and buying hops by the ounce just won't cut it...especially if you want to try something along the lines of pliny the elder, at a pound of hops in a 5 gallon batch!

Speaking of cost-effective home-brewing..I came to realize recently that Grains Process sells sacks of Canada Maltings 2-Row for ~$43. Of course you can get 2-row from G&P for $35 per sack, but that's all the way in Fergus. $43 is the cheapest I've seen for a sack of base grain in the GTA.

I just wrote up a recipe yesterday for a double IPA with 26oz of hops. Me and some buddies are brewing it next Saturday.

I'm probably stocked up on hops for at least the summer... but variety is nice.

Does anyone have a list of what Grains Process stocks? Marris Otter? They're REALLY close to me.

I did have a list, but I seem to have misplaced or deleted it. Nevertheless, I don't recall MO being on it. Can't hurt to give them a call regardless. 416-291-3226.

Update: Found the list and MO is not on it. I would still call to confirm. Listed are 2-Row, Carastan, Chocolate, Black, Crystal, Munich, Vienna and Wheat malt.

That is fantastic. Whole leaf cascade at $8.80/lb.

Any Bartowel homebrewers who are interested in purchasing, speak up and we shall get an order placed.

I wonder whether local pick-up is an option? I work in Mississauga..

How did you guys make out with this?

I'm considering ordering from Hops direct, but wondered if beer and wine filter was worth it. Their website is lacking to say the least.

US Challenger
Citra
Sonnet
Willamette

Pellet (1 lb):
Amarillo
Bullion
Cascade
Centennial
Columbus
US Challenger
Chinook
Citra
UK Fuggle
US Golding
US Hallertau
GR Hallertau
GR Hersbrucker
Mt Hood
GR Northern Brewer
Nugget
Perle
CZ Saaz
GR Spalter Select
Strisselspalt
US Tettnanger
GR Tettnanger

Just fire him an e-mail (you can find the address on the website) and he'll be able to get you set up.
