LCBO Spring 2010 Release
Here's my thoughts on this release so far.
Trafalgar Oak Aged Rye: Pass.
Höss Doppel Hirsch Doppel Bock: I was underwhelmed by this last year but figured I'd pick up another bottle and give it a second chance. I'm in no hurry for that.
Christoffel Dry-Hopped Nobel: Had it last night. The aroma is great. It's decent tasting, but flat and lifeless. I'd go for a Prima Pils or Pilsner Urquell over this any day.
Hog's Back Traditional English Ale: The insomniac's choice. Dull as ditch water. I doubt I will have a more boring beer in my life. That said, it seems to be selling well at the LCBOs I have visited recently.
Schneider's Organic: I've had it before and liked it, but Denison's is my go-to hefe right now so I'll probably skip this one. Considering the LCBO carries a number of hefes I can't imagine anyone would miss this if it didn't show up.
Gouden Carolus Ambrio: I have no strong feelings one way or the other on this one.
St. Louis Gueuze Lambic: This should do well with the Mort Subite Kriek and Framboise crowd. It's not for me. Weirdly sweet.
Great Lakes Orange Peel Ale: Their seasonals seem to please a lot of people. I'll leave them to it.
Rogue Brutal Bitter: I've had five or six of these so far with loads more in my fridge for later. Great stuff. Better than I remember, just a great little hop fix. Frankly they can keep the Yellow Snow, Kell's Irish and the nut brown and just keep bringing this one in.
Railway City Brewing Dead Elephant: Picked up a pair of these to try on the weekend. Love the label. Too bad this doesn't seem to be distributed any farther east than Toronto.
Grand River Brewing Russian Gun Imperial Stout: I grabbed a bunch of these because it's a good beer and to help support them at the LCBO. It's a shame they don't put more effort into their labels though. They look like they were designed in Microsoft Word and printed on Avery labels using an inkjet printer.

Wait a minute!! I love the GR labels and 500ml bottles. Apropos some little provincial German town. Totally suit the "underground" vibe of this brewer, who happen to make fucking great beer.
Now, if Tr-f-lgar were not so brewing-challenged, their labels would probably seem less garish and amateur as well. It's all about the power of association! Fcuk man, look at some Trappist Belgie labels, looks like some have not been re-designed for several decades and yet we love them.

BTW, Grand River are using new bottles, they're no longer using the German style bottles. The new ones have a sharper shoulder, like long Belgian stubbies. I agree. There are too many poop heads out there who care about labels.
My advice for these types is this:
At least eat the label next time to give yourself a legitimate complaint !!

i too had a bottle of the dead elephant yesterday. i had a growler of the original batch when it first came out and it was all "players light". the bottle yesterday had some slight diectyl and burnt rubber autolysis. better but still not clean.TJ wrote:I had the Dead Elephant last night--not a huge fan. I haven't had a bad bottle of Dead Elephant yet.
Recent Beeradvocate reviews would suggest that others have been experiencing largely positive things with this beer. Ahh well, those who don't buy it will be saving more for me I guess

Though not part of this seasonal release, Creemore Springs Kellerbier will be appearing in early May - apropos to this forum section if not this thread (not to mention a pretty competitive option to Hogs Back TEA and some other disappointments.)
