Nothing special. Maybe ever so slightly better than mainstream industrial MolsLab lager. Certainly nothing to write home about.

But then, I haven't tried any in several years. Maybe things have improved.

No market research. Personally, I'm a fan. Moose is not the most full bodied or flavourful of beers, but I really enjoy it. Not to say that there aren't much better beers out there, to be sure. I just thought I'd ask what you afficionados thought. Moosehead was, for a long time, my only beer of choice before I began broadening my horizons.

The last time I tried Moosehead was several years ago...and it inspired me to repeat a part of the Simpsons where the Germans take over the power plant. At the bar, one says to Homer...."I am new to this country but I have to tell you your beer tastes like svill to us...do I have that right...I'm thinking that only a svine would drink this beer..."

Maybe it was a bad keg....but easily the worst beer I had ever tasted.

To be fair, I think Moosehead is brewed under contract in Ontario, so the original maritime version has got to be better.....

Don't think so. Moosehead has a distribution company here in Ontario (office in Mississauga). They bought the Imported Beer Company from Sleeman about 10 years ago, renamed it the Premium Beer company and now distribute their Moosehead brand and several imported products (Double Diamond among other I think) through the distribution company. They could still be brewing locally someplace, but I don't believe that to be the case.

Hey Mad Max, your story sounds similar to mine. Years ago I started to venture away from Molbat with the Moose, moved on to Sleeman & Muskoka. Now…..well I’m a Beer Geek , always looking for something different and wanting to know the history behind it. Enjoy the ride, it sounds like you’re hooked.

On the topic of Moosehead, I keep seeing their Pale Ale (Red Label), does anyone know if it actually tastes like a Pale Ale?

Nope, just your typical Canadian Bland, sorry Blond Ale. On tap in some places, possibly just here in Halifax, they actually call it Moosehead India Pale Ale to try and hit the Keith's market.

Sad...very sad. It is interesting to see how far Keith's is ahead in the market though. I have some bar owners telling me that Keith's is over 50% of their sales in 20+ tap bars. Labatt's is rolling over Molson with this one.

Mmm.... Pale Ales... My favorite style!

Personal favorites in bottles at the moment:

Mill St. Tankhouse Pale Ale - Now available at quite a few LCBO locations, popped out tonight to the LCBO at Mavis & Dundas in Mississauga to grab some, and I'm enjoying one right now, delicious!

Niagara Falls Pale Ale - Not as bitter as the Mill St., but still a fine pale ale, well balanced and a little fruity tasting.

Cameron's Auburn Ale - Maybe this isn't quite a Pale Ale, but I think people who enjoy Pale Ales would enjoy it. Perhaps a wee bit darker, really nice well balanced flavorful beer with a good hop bitterness.

in Draught, if you wanna go BEYOND the PALE, and see what a REAL IPA is all about, go for Perry's SGT MAJOR'S IPA, brilliant, bitter as hell, correct me if I'm wrong Perry, but I do believe it has the highest IBU's of any draught beer available in Canada? In Toronto I think both C'est What and Beer Bistro have it now...

Perry owns the rights to the highest IBUs in Ontario, but not with his IPA. Corporal has a higher bitterness rating.

As far as other beer in Canada, I am sure that some of the really big beers (Barleywines and Imperial stouts) brewed at some of the Quebec brewpubs are at least in the neighbourhood of Corporal Punishment, though the sweetness from the high amount of residual sugars in these beers will mask the bitterness.
