It seems to me that of all the weird and annoying liquor laws in Ontario, that would be the easiest one to change and make better. To me it would be nice if bars could just sell beer over the counter to go (either in bottle form or in growlers filled from taps). I mean sure most bars would just sell sixes of coors light or Keith's but I am sure there would be at least a few good brewpubs or beer bars that would run with the idea and have fun selling stuff you can't get in bottles or at the LCBO. Plus you wouldn't have that whole "won't someone think of the children’ thing since the people selling the beer would also be experienced in alcohol sales and ID checking.TheSevenDuffs wrote:Damn Ontario liquor laws...JerCraigs wrote:They would need a separate retail entrance a la the Granite/Mill Street to do that I think.TheSevenDuffs wrote:If the guy who is opening this brewpub is reading this thread - two words: GROWLER FILLS!

Me oh my, there is a COMPLETELY different training involved for ID checking in packaged beer.Kel Varnsen wrote: I am sure there would be at least a few good brewpubs or beer bars that would run with the idea and have fun selling stuff you can't get in bottles or at the LCBO. But I think its just apropos that "Nervous Nanny-State Ontario" hates the idea of some rakish dude at a bar drinking awhile & then afterwards just getting some bottles 'to go.' There is a psychological hurdle to be jumped here, even if it is an irrational one.

Ahhh yes... think of the children. You wouldn't want a drunk coming in for a growler fill while they were sitting down for dinner, would you?
Does the law state that you need a separate 'entrance'?
ie. Could someone have a take-out window? That would be a lot easier to fit into a pub layout.
London Ontario actually had a "Beer Store" with a drive-thru take-out window (they may still have it, I dunno).
Spezial in Bamberg literally has a take-out window. You press the door-bell and someone takes your order... bottles, fresh bretzel or a fill of your stein for consumption in their laneway. Great stuff. Fassla across the street had one too... they gave me a funny look when I had the spezial mug filled... I'm not sure I was 'allowed' to cross the street.

Speaking of minding the drunks, Derek an elderly man at Queen Coxwell LCBO was denied service. Allegedly impaired, but not obviously or clearly, the guy was like 65 or something. Was buying 12 cans of some high-octane crap beer the LC sells. Whatever is that high-octane crap beer for, only to sanctimoniously DENY it to the core market for Faxe and Crest 10% - ?

It is still here and incredibly busy.
