free rhizomes

hey gang. a friend has given up on growing hops, and gave me his entire collection. i'm hanging on to the two first-year rhizomes, but i've got some big 3-ish year old rhizomes. i figured the best bet would be to split them up among anybody who wanted some (within reason).

one is cascade, which i already have so i'll give the whole thing away.

the other two are willamette and goldings, and i'm planning to keep some of each for myself and share the rest.

i haven't even opened them up yet (was dark when i got home), so i'll check them out tomorrow and try to get an idea for how many cuttings i can take from them. in the mean time, let me know if you're interested in a share, and which of the three interest you. i'll dish them out on a first come, first serve basis.

these should get into the ground soon, so i'll leave this offer up until the weekend. after that, i'll split them up among whoever replies.

This is a great way for some T.O. homebrewers to give growing a shot.

hmm, well if there isn't much GTA interest i wouldn't be opposed to throwing some in a padded envelope/small box and tossing it in the mail. should only take a day or so within the province - certainly shorter than when i've ordered hops online. if so, i'd ask that the recipient cover the shipping cost, which should be minimal.

okay, i tore into these tonight...good news and bad news.

the cascade was a write-off. dried out, and no sign of any new growth. it was also the smallest of the three, so perhaps just didn't have enough reserves to survive. i didn't see anything that would make a viable cutting and ditched the whole thing.

the goldings was a little rough too. i dug around and broke it up a bit and managed to pull off a couple of small rhizomes, about the same size as the little commercial ones i got years back. they looked a little beat up, but some signs of life still. i planed one, the other is up for grabs to whoever wants to give it a shot.

the willamette on the other hand was in great shape. the biggest of three, with a root base that was about 30"x18" and pretty thickly caked in soil. once i rinsed it off one end looked like it didn't have much new growth and had signs of mold, but the other half looked fantastic. i made a couple of cuts and got a nice big one for myself, and in the process created one other nice big one, two slightly smaller but still big ones, and a handful of small commercial-esque sized single shoots about 6-8" long and finger sized.the biggest three barely fit into a freezer sized ziplock and have plenty of new buds. i have very little doubt in their viability.

so yeah... sorry for everyone who wanted cascade, but the willamette does look excellent and are far larger than anything i've ever bought or seen for sale. the goldings still has a good shot too, with a little TLC. anyone who's spoken is considered to be in priority order, so let me know if you want one or more of 'em.

I might be able to drop by Volo tonight. What time you going to be there?
I only have a short window, perhaps around 6-7 ish as I have to be out somewhere later.
Otherwise, maybe sometime next week I could drop by your pace and pick them up? Unless you think theyt'd be ok by UPS or something? Jus afraid they might dry out.....

i've received them via mail and such in the past. they're usually wrapped in a damp newspaper and sealed in a ziplock, so that's how they've been stored. i've also kept them in the fridge so they stay cool. but yeah, i'll probably be there by about that time. i'll PM you my info.
