Hungarian Beer at L.C.B.O.

Hi Everyone,

Well the L.C.B.O. has brought in a Beer from Hungary. Szalon Sor, a Pale Lager. Was checking their website last night and there it was. For Ratebeerians, probably a new Country for most of us.

I picked up a can today and it said ot was brewed and packaged in austria. there's also a new indian lager called "royal challenge". oh joy

I find that there are numerous eastern European beers imported in the last few years that are decent but not particularly good. The idea seems to be to bring in beers from a given country (e.g. recently now Vietnam) rather than numerous fine beers even though doing so may concentrate on just a few countries. Belgium in particular should be the focus of the LCBO much more than it is, ditto the U.S., ditto Germany. Most of the canned beers of Germany offered at the LCBO are not great in my opinion and the whole range could be revamped with advantage. I thnk the only way to do this is to set up a separate imported beer Vintages section. While the choice of bees seems large at present, it should be 3 times as large in my view with a greater focus placed on quality. In the end, only full privatisation will bring in the range seen in, say, Premier Foods in Buffalo, NY or World Of Beer in Rochester, NY. But even without such an approach, more surely can be done, within the confines of the present system, which seems at present somewhat scattershot in its approach.
