Searching for a source for grains and yeast downtown...

Post by Gueuzer »

Oh, yeah, hops too...
With Brew-Your-Own gone I'm lost. I'm searching for a source for various Belgian malts (e.g. deWulf - Cosyns, Dingemans, CaraVienne, Special B) (as well as the more standard stuff) as well as a consistent source for appropriate liquid yeasts in Downtown Toronto since I do not have a vehicle.

(I am but a poor grad student :( )

Is there hope? :-? (for the brew, I know that I am a lost cause  )

Cheers,

Andre

Did you have any luck finding a place downtown? Or even mid-town or uptown?

I haven't been able to find anything within reach by TTC aside from mail order. It is really frustrating, especially given the relatively strong craft brewing movement here in Ontario.

Nuts. My friends and I want to resume our brewing. I'll have to check out Fermentations on the Danforth to see if they have anything suitable.

If they do have a good supply of brewing ingredients be sure to let us know. As well as any other places you may find.

Cheers,

I went in on Saturday. They don't have grains to sell but you can buy hops and yeast from them.

Although it's not close to downtown at all, you might want to consider making a day-trip to Fergus to buy grains from Gilbertson and Page a 25kg bag is 30$, 5$ more if you want it crushed. Maybe you can con a friend with a car into driving... that's what I plan on doing.

Over the Christmas holidays, I stayed at Spinnakers in Victoria, BC. They actually had some grain bags from Ontario... I think it was Tottenham. Presumably they do some good malting... but I haven't tracked them down.

(It might be a little closer than Fergus).

There's a place in Oakville, Ein Stein that stocks basic grains and dry yeast.
They are also willing to order draught supplies on a one-off basis if they can get them.

I live downtown and work out there, so I can bring things back to the city if someone would like.

Does anyone know of a place that sells draught supplies to the public?

P.S. Ein Stein is on north service rd, Phone: 905 825 2337.
There is another place south of the QEW in oakville but I know nothing about it or the exact location (It's near Koris Rotti shop).

http://www.simgo.com/ in Mississauga is probably your best bet.

I have used Ein Stein before, nice folks. They even let my grind up grains I got from black oak using their hand grinder.

Anyone have some good on-line/mail-order places?

I recently did a mail-order from Saskatoon (they happened to have a bunch of stuff I was looking for):
http://www.paddockwood.com/index.php

The base shipping was almost $10, but I got a bunch of specialty grains (6 kg I think) and some hops, and shipping was under $15. Not cheap, but it does come straight to your door!

There's a place in Brampton:

Here's the London scene:
http://www.brewhaven.on.ca/new.htm (good for raw ingredients)
http://secure.getebiz.com/1050/a8.html (good for kits & supplies)

A brew-buddy ordered a bunch of hardware from Paddock Wood. Customer service was very quick and friendly and the equipment has held up nicely.

We also purchase ingredients regularly from Wine & Beer Factory, but haven't done mail order. The fellow who runs the place is pretty cool and has kept the store open a little late when we've called to let him know we're on the way.

there's a spot here in Hamilton where I get all my grains other supplies. They're a brew-your-own place, but seem more than happy to supply me with my required grain. If interested I can drop the number...

Yeah, what's the name and where is it? Do they have different kinds of malt?
