Cask Dragon's Breath Ale

Post by Belgian »

So I tried my first-ever Cask Ale today - Dragon's Breath Real Ale, in Kingston Brew Co.

I never was partial to KBC beers, and I admit I was expecting some disappointing stuff in my glass, but this was QUITE delicious.

The ratings seem like wildly different beers, do you think tihs is due to cask variability, or might the beer be getting better?

It's worth a stop in Kingston if you are passing by.

I didn't like cask Dragon's Breath when I visited Kingston Brewing Co. a few years ago and that could be because Kingston brewing uses malt extract instead of malted barley. Does anyone know if they have switched to malted barley recently?

Can't say what malt extract would be like in it.

Plan to re-test it with repeat visits. Honestly, this was the first quite tasty pint I've had there, and I've soldiered through a few. Hmm.

The KBC is still a malt extract brewery. There is a limited capacity in the brewhouse, so I find that the beers are better in the winter when the pub is less busy and the beers have a few more days to age. I had a pint of the pale ale yesterday (non-cask) and it was considerably better than the one I had in August. It reminded me a lot of the version that was brewed at the Hart facilities before their demise.

I've been to the KBC probably 3 or 4 times in the past 2 years, I prefer the Dragon's Breath Pale Ale to their Real Ale version, I originally thought it was just a Cask version of the Pale Ale, but it's not. From my memory, the Cask version isn't nearly as hoppy, I didn't enjoy it as much... When I go, I order the Pale Ale, and I agree with Inertia, it's like the old bottled version... As I've noted before, if you're driving from Toronto to Montreal, it's a great stop for lunch!
