So i went down to the local lcbo, looking for something dark, rich and delicious. Something i could sit and enjoy after a long day etc. I was going to go with the usual Guinness or give Newcastle another try (last time i had newcastle on tap they were selling it super cheap, and i of course didn't realize that it was probably because they were finishing the keg- until i was sipping a watery flavourless newcastle) and i had it again recently in cans, but not after having a few tetleys! ;)

So i was on the look out for some london porter which i've seen this one carry... didn't have it. Any other options? I really wanted to get some Sinha, which I haven't tried yet, and hear is pretty excellent... Didn't have it...

So i picked up a case of teh Dragon stout.

I'm pretty impressed, not altogether fantastic- but not terrible. Surpassed my expectations.

Decent taste, bit of coffee, doesn't hide the alcohol terribly well, but that's alright. Nice burnt toffe sort of thing, head doesn't last long. Pleasing aroma and colour...

Thoughts?

You mean there is such a thing as a non-watery, flavourful Newcastle? :P

Sorry, I just find Newcastle to be completely bland, boring and overrated. It's the Bud or Blue of brown ales. Try one side-by-side with a Black Oak Nut Brown sometime and you'll never go back.

As for the Dragon Stout - it's a touch sweeter than I usually like my stouts to be, but that's to be expected for the style. They like their stouts sweet in the Caribbean. I don't mind one once in a while, though. And it's certainly better than the other Caribbean stout that the LCBO carries, Royal Extra Stout.

after having several tetley's, i didn't really notice. I had heard many times that NB was too sweet and watery.

But i trust steve marriot when he says "newcastle brown, sill sure smack you down"

ever seen the picture of robert plant (at some large stadium) with a dove in one hand- and a cigarette and NB in the other?

maybe they just had bad taste!




I'd love to try some other solid nut browns... I had Sam Smith's and loved it. I wasn't too keen on some of the ontario micro nut browns...

So would Shlitz malt liquor but is a "smacking down" all you're after?
I don't always piss in a bottle but when I do...I prefer to call it Dos Equis.

the lcbo website (which i've noticed is terribly unreliable) says that the Black Oak NB is only available in toronto and such. I'll have to keep my eyes open next time i'm back that way.
